Wow, I really hope mine blooms now.

I just noticed the other day my pink fruiting banana is also blooming. I have more stuff blooming in the winter than the spring, LOL.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

well keonikale, all i have to say to that is get some pics for us.... especially for those in the ice storm!

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Just when you think it can't get any better... all three sets of pedals and tongues.

Both are absolutely beautiful. It must be just thrilling to have blooms in the winter like that.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks, and it is very exciting. I was starting to think I'd never see a BOP I owned bloom.

Nice, I keep hoping that'll be my next plant to bloom.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

do you plunge yours in a pot in the summer, and feed with a flower booster, and give it a lot of sun?

Plunge it? I do give it lots of fertilizer with high Phosphate (bloom booster) and it had several hours of sun. I'm honestly shocked that neither bloomed this year. I think I may repot both in the spring in better soil. That's seemingly what helped the Bird along as well as most of my other plants. I've started giving them organic fertilizers since last fall, as I've heard it helps too.

I'll keep my fingers crossed... they may bloom yet under the halides, though the cooler temps (65-72F) probably don't help.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah that means sink it into the ground while in the pot. here is a sit that has just about everything to konw about plumerias; http://www.plumeria101.com/
i just use the normal miraclegro or colorburst etc. on it about every month in the summer. i have heard they stop growing at under 65 degrees

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Ah, in that case... yes, I do plunge them, LOL. Have been for a few years actually. That's why it's irritating to me... they have gotten full sun, been plunged, get plenty of fertilizer (but not too much) and plenty of water during growing months (cut back during winter a bit of course).

The only plumie I've ever had bloom is almost laughable. I bought it on Maui or Kauai as a cutting and it had already started to send up the bloom node. So I brought it home and potted it... actually got two or three half decent blooms. The other two cuttings both grew nodes, but they never bloomed, just died off. I have read tons of material on plumeria and I still have to be doing something wrong. I've attempted to do everything right, and every year I loose one (and I'm praying this isn't another one of those winters... I only have two left).

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

i may have a cutting of one left over this spring if you wuold like a try at another.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

I'd love to try it. I bought one from a lady in Orangeburg and it's a lovely stick with leaves, LOL. That's all it's even been in the three years I've had it. *sigh*

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

which cultivar?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

I honestly have no idea. I've never really ID'd any of my plumerias. The one that bloomed (that I lost last winter) had the white lemony smelling blooms. I've yet to see the other two.

I am going to try and bring back several cuttings in April from Kaua'i too. I think I know why I lost so many now, I used to try and hibernate them in the winter and/or I kept their roots colder than they'd have liked.

I still would love to try a local grown variety (even though I technically do have one already). Perhaps I'm shocking the others with the change of conditions.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Just had to note this. I thought there were only three sets of petals and a tongue for each bud, but yesterday the fourth set popped out on the first to bloom.

The second bloom has it's first two sets out now. I also have two new buds coming up... so I might have flowers through March at this rate.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

way to go!

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

You give me hope that one day mine will do the same.

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Ah, here I sit with a seedling BOP, barely 2" high.
All of your BOP are beautiful! They are 'unreal'
looking. I had no idea they could be so persnickety,
or take so long to bloom. Good thing I like the
foliage, it will keep me happy til they decide to put
on a show.
I was given a cutting of Plumeria from a friend
back from Hawaii. DH said it was a stick. He says
that about many plants I've rescued, too. "They are
a pot of sticks" and voila! They start to grow. My Plum
bloomed the first year I had it. Kept it on my covered
deck always, and until I let it get too cold, bloomed
several years in a row. I fell in love with them.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Maybe I 'baby' my plumeria too much, or have them in the wrong soil. I try and try and they won't bloom. Ironically I did the same with the BOP for a long time, same result. I sunk it in the ground this year, left it alone for the most part... and sure enough. Blooms. And 4 new buds have now appeared - wooohooo.

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Congrats! It is always so sweet when we have to wait
so long to get those blooms. Eureka! You did it!
