This is the same plant that we had in the basket but steped up when we put it in the hoophouse. As you can see she likes to grow sideways.

Orange Sunshine was a Tropical Sunset X Dr.Seuss cross by JT Sessions aka gone2seed. The more I grow this plant the more I like it. We were the seedling parents and when she first bloomed we sent JT a cutting above the Y. Later he asked if he could get a cutting below the Y because he wanted something he could get more cuttings off of. She does like to bloom.
Can I ask, how did you become a seedling parent?
We were given seeds by JT and grew the plant until she bloomed. JT was the hybridizer and we were the seedling parents.

Once a Brug Y's it puts it's energy into blooms.

You either have to cut down low on a branch under the Y or from a branch extending from the plant below where the Y's are or cut a vigorous sucker that comes up from the roots.

It is hard to give a specific amt of time that a brug will bloom because weather, fertilizer, and variety of the brug all seem to come into play. However, in general brug cuttings taken from above the Y bloom sooner than those taken below the Y. The plant/cutting taken above the Y sort of "remembers" where it was in the scheme of its growing/blooming. So it continues to grow and flower faster in general. Whereas the cutting from a vigorous sucker or down below the Y needs to grow and make its Y and then bloom.
Maybe someone else could explain this a little better lol, but that is kind of how I see it.

Why would they want a cutting from below the Y instead of above. It will bloom faster above.

Robyn, with a cutting below the Y, you have a better chance for it to grow into a standard, (tree shape) rather than a bush type. It takes longer though.
The brug pictured is so perfect for the hanging basket thing.. I just love that too!! I also like the compact growth on that one...

I never thought about it being in a hanging basket. I truthfully like the bushy type more than the tree. It is a very beautful brug. I like this one too.

Robynznest, look close at the picture, if you were to plant this Brug in the ground, all the blooms would be on the ground. Different Brugs for different situations.

I had Versi Peach that was only a couple feet tall when it Y'd and still had blooms dragging the ground.. short enough for the TuTu dog to smell em! LOL
Love the peachy color of this one. A basket brug would be great. Is it hard to keep it watered enough?

That is so neat. I just kind of took it for granted that these plants turn into trees the way everyone talked about them. Do you think the one in the basket will ever get any bigger or will it stay short enough to hang out. There is so much to learn.

The only orange I had that bloomed it's head off was Tequila Sunrise last year.. I don't think it's as pretty as Orange Sunshine.. but it sure smelled divine!

I will be looking at the Brugs once they 'y' this coming season and decide what to do with them. A horizontal growth after the Brug 'Ys' is the best. I'm thinking maybe MEM might be a candidate here? Maybe too big. Tootsie I will look at for sure :~)
It took a long time for Orange Sunshine to grow out of that basket. It started to require more frequent watering as the roots filled the pot. That's where the polymer water holding crystals would come in handy.
Funny you say that because last night, I handed my husband Peanut that was on a table in my courtyard, in full flower I might add, to put on the porch because a storm was coming. It is such a well branched short plant, I was thinking it would be a great basket plant after having seen yours.

Thanks so much Joyce. I miss you guys too! I may try to get a pic in the morning. I tried to get one the other day for Delisa but they all were terrible. And the blooms are almost white right now.
I spent the day with Patricia. I am so proud of her being the new brug president. She grows incredible brugs!! LOL. We went Christmas shopping and then to lunch. She left me about 4 and like an idiot I went on till just about 20 minutes ago. I am so beat. And I am so sick of Christmas already. LOL
I am sure Pat will make a great president.
Orange Sunshine is a wonderful and a very strange grower. I have grown her since 2006 and she has very few buges, long lasting blooms, smells like oranges. She is a work horse and starts new flushes before the
first one is over. I have her in dapple sun but I am sure she can in grow more sun.
