My mother always grew glorious madonna lilies in Chicago, which has a much harsher winter than ours in coastal Maine (zone 5b, 6), but I have had no luck. I've sweetened our soil for them as directed, planted them at just the right depth and time. They're mulched along with my other heritage lilies (which grow beautifully.) But zip. Some people grumble that the stock isn't strong any longer. Has anyone had success in northern New England? Same no show with lycoris, the August delight that exploded into in bloom from no where for my mother. Is our summer season up north too short?
madonna lilies, lycoris lilies can they grow in maine?
Did you ever get Lycoris foliage in the Spring? How long have you had it?
L,candidum/Madonna lilies grow really well here. They have survived winters frozen, unmulched ground without snow in temps -10 or below. They multiply nicely too. My soil is more alkaline, 7.5 or so.
As for lycoris, I have no idea.
