I did this with mine and it worked good.
Look whos blooming today!.Sinn.Amizade, another special plant from a trade with Amy.
Photo's and Chat continued ...
Good Morning Ladies! Well, it's almost afternoon and I see Gail and Jan were up and on their computers early this morning. I am loving all this information from you gal's! I have one strep of the last two that Gail gave me. It looks pretty pitiful but after reading these tips & hints I've put her in a zip lok bag for awhile to see it it comes back to life, or rather perks up since it's not totally a goner yet!
I have some little seedlings growing from the seed that Snowrose sent me. Hopefully I will be able to keep them alive to grow to mature plants! We shall see!
I love Strep Stephanie, she is so pretty! And, oh man ... Sinn. Amizade is absolutely Gorgeous! Jan, you are so sweet to offer me another Kohleria to try ... I might take you up on it next spring! Great info about "rolling" them ... I printed it out for my file!
Ok, I took a break when my phone rang. I've been on the phone with my oldest sister for the past 45 minutes! We are talking about Christmas and flying my Dad from Tampa to Ft Lauderdale to my sisters house for the holiday so he doesn't have to drive. I better go and get his flight booked before there are no seats left! Think I will do that now before I get sidetracked again!
Be back later!
jan, we must think alike as I had just read that information from Rob's night before last. Mine couldn't be rolled as they are too big and almost woody like. Next time when they get leggy and are younger i want to try that rolling method you used.
Your Amizade looks good. Good luck Lin on doming your strep.
nap time, ladies! (Yawning)
Just a few blooms tonight.
jannich, the last picture will be for you to see what color the streps from seed will be. She hasn't even opened yet, but you can tell what colors the blooms will be. (I am getting excited too far ahead of time)
Ness Ruffled Skies is a much deeper color than this (she is under the lights as usual when I take pics)
Man ... I had a long post all typed out and then hit a wrong key and lost the entire thing! Arrrrrrgh!
I was saying how much I like that AV Ness' Ruffled Skies! And, I LOVE the bloom on that Strep 'Rose Blush' ... very different and very pretty!
Gail, you really are getting into Begonia's too aren't you? This time next year you may have as many Begonias as Gessies! LOL. Is that Begonia leaf I see towards the front in the last photo that one called Fire Flush? Brenda posted a pic awhile back of a Beautiful Begonia and I think that was the name ... it was really Gorgeous! I have never had luck with Rex Begonias, they are so pretty and I love them but have never had one survive for long in my house! I do ok with the cane/mallet type begonias and have 3 or 4 of them. I have that little Begonia Bonita Shea that I got from Snowrose and really love it. I'm not sure what type it is. I know it's not a Rex or Cane type and I can't right off remember the other types - one is rhizamatous and there's the fibrous root kind. hmmm ... guess I should read up on them.
Well, I am rambling - I know, what else is new?! LOL. Guess I will go do some googling and look at plants! hee hee ... sure fix for a wandering mind and boredom! I am not ordering anything until spring!
Y'all have a great night!
Lin, guess what? My begonias wouldn't be alive that small if I didn't have them in a dome living!
Although I have been potting up plants out on the porch tonight and the rexes are liking this cool weather and starting to bloom.
(you and I both know what cool weather is.......that would be lingering around 75)
Yes, that is Fireflash and I started a leaf from it and is growing too. Now I have to not make the same mistake I made with Bonita Shea leaf. I tried to separate the babies waay too soon.
Good morning everyone! Great pictures Gail.Your begonias look great and baby strep looks like its going to be a nice color..Glad your new strep has peaked up for you.Rose Blush is very different.Gotta run, talk to you later,On my way to the heart doctor this morning.
Mrsbonnie: I like that one! Hard to pronounce name but that is one pretty plant! Does it get really large? Those leaves look a lot like AV leaves, soft and fuzzy ... and I love that flower! Looks like another bloom getting ready to open and I see another bud too! That one's going to be a real Beauty when in full bloom!
great pics, bigred. i saw some Optimara something. Do you have a shop? Your plants look awesome.
My AV's are looking very poor, and I donno what I am doing wrong! I even bought the special pots for them? The only one that is still looking good is in a small clay pot, and I add water to the plastic thingy when it is dry. No flowers on it, but still kickin!
misty.......
There are so many ways to grow a violet. I am starting to wick everything i grow and put at least 1/2" of perlite in the bottom. Are you sure they didn't get full sunlight of some kind. Direct sun will get them fast, yet they need bright indirect light.
Good luck and I am sorry they are not doing well. Do you feed them each time you water because you need to. I use a 12-36-14 3 times in a row and then cut back to a more balanced fertilizer where the numbers are all lower than 10.
These are hardly a member of the gesneriad family but I just have to share on the AV forum with my friends.
Phughes, a DGer gave me these last May and I like the shape of them to put on each end of a shelf on the front porch. Since they got absolutely no direct sun I just thought I had two pretty green plants of Bromeliads.
Look what i found last night but had to wait to take a picture today.
Hi Gail, they haven't had any direct sun, just the light coming through the windows on the back door. I have the Miracle-Gro AV food that I feed them, but they seemed to do better before I started feeding them?
Is that Mother In Laws Tongue in your pics? I had heard they flowered, but not had the luck of seeing it yet!
Misty: What Gail has there is not Mother In Laws Tongue (Sansevieria) but rather an Aechmea/Bromeliad plant. They are two entirely different family of plant.
Here's the link for Mother In Laws Tongue: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/431/
And the link for Aechmea: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=aechmea&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search
The one with the common name "Mother In Law's Tongue" does bloom also, but the blooms are very inconspicuous. I have one that I've had for 30 years that bloomed once that I noticed and it was nothing special.
Lin, help misty with her avs, please. I don't know what to tell her or how to help her.
LOL ... really, hee hee ... Gail, you want ME to help someone with their AV's?? I am the last person to give advice on Gesneriads! It's just luck that some of mine are living! I have a few AV's that look pretty puny right now too! And, it's because I haven't tended to them like I should have. Some dried out and some I don't know what happened. I actually had the reservoir pots go completely dry on a couple and couldn't save them. Some of mine seem to really suck up more water than others! I was told those reservoir pots would hold enough water to last a month but with some of mine it seems like the water level drops quite quickly ... guess they are just thirsty little buggers!
Misty: What direction does the back of your house face ... what direction is the sun coming from through the windows on that door? If it is real strong sunlight and the plants are real close to the windows that could cause leaf burn. It's so hard to give advice to someone not knowing their own growing conditions. I know some grow AV's in window sills but I have heard that it's too cold up north to grow AV's like that because of the cold coming from the glass. My AV's are on those metal plant stands with those shop lights wired to the shelf above them. I sit Chirita's and some other things in my east facing windows because they get real good bright light there but no direct sun coming through the windows. All of my plants are in plastic pots. I don't like using clay or terra cotta type pots for Gesneriads because they dry out too quickly. I also wick all of my AV's and Gesneriads. I don't feed mine very often. I know if I did feed more they would bloom better! But, I am lazy and don't always get around to doing it. I use both Eleanor's VF-11 and Dyna Grow all purpose (7-9-5) plant food. I plan on buying some of the Dyna Grow Bloom Booster plant food before long, just keep forgetting! I use liquid plant food that I mix with a gallon of water straight from our well. We just recently got hooked up to city water but I won't use it since most city water has chlorine and other chemicals in it. If I used the city water, I would have to let it sit for 24-48 hours for the chlorine to dissipate.
I sure wish I could give advice but all I can do is tell what works for me and as we all know, what works for one NEVER works for someone else! LOL. I think it has a lot to do with the location inside your home, heat vents (Our Air Conditioning is still on down here) and water, fertilizer etc and how they get acclimated to those conditions. With me, it's always been trial and error with all plants, not just Gessies!
Well.........I'm SO excited everyone!! I FINALLY have a flower on something in this house! *lol*
I haven't been posting much as nothing is blooming here and quite honestly, I'm so sorry but I haven't been very "sociable" either :(
I'm trying to work on it but even typing on the keyboards seems to "be alot of work" right now. I can't seem to do much of anything right now that I'm not frustrated easily with :(
Anyways, here's my pretty little baby. She's an X-Condonanthus Vista. I got her as one of my birthday gifts back in October.
Oooh, Kim ... I've never heard of that plant called x Condoanthus Vista and it is beautiful! I love it! Must go googling to read about that one!
Beautiful Strep too! And, WOW .... I am in Awe of people who are into pollinating and hybridizing. Keep us posted on the seeds from that pod! You might have bunches of little baby Party Boy's come spring!
LOL ... that sounded a bit strange: "A Bunch of Party Boy's"!
Thanks for all that wonderful info! They are on the South Side of the house, but I have a homemade "towel' curtain on about 3/4 of the door, so they don't get much of the direct light. It stays pretty bright on that side of the house most of the day. There aren't any vents close to where they are. They are sitting on a bakers rack, probably about 4 feet off the floor? The AV bowls dry out WAY too fast. Mine said it would hold water at least 7 days, but I haven't found that to be true. They have gone downhill since I started feeding them? But they were fine prior to that? The one in the clay pot dries out quickly, but I always check on the water level and try to keep the little plastic cup filled. This is even the one that was so puny from the mother plant.
I hope to be able to make it back as we are having MAJOR computer problems. I was about to have DG withdrawl! LOL
Thanks again for all the help!
Misty: If it were my plants, I think I would stop feeding them for a month or so and see if they perk back up ... it could be an over fertilization problem. I don't know anything about Miracle Grow AV plant food but it could be that your plants are getting too much.
Ok, I will try that then. Thanks so much! Lin, you are ALWAYS so helpful! As are many, many others on here! :)
I forgot to ask what you mean by "wicking" your plants? Thanks again!
