I have been waiting for several days for my Grandpa Ott's Morning Glories to stop blooming but everyday there is just one more. The blossums are so beautiful that I just leave the vines there. This is the first time that I have successfully grown morning glories...not because they are unavailable but because I balked at putting up another trellis. To get around this, I just nailed a five feet long piece of chicken wire and the plants almost covered the whole thing.
Thanks,
Chuck

You probably have hot summer in your zone, so your Ipomoea purpurea MGs will prefer fall blooming after the intense heat has passed. Try growing some of the Ipomoea nils (which are smaller and like the heat better) and you will have some blooming almost all year! AND you don't have to put up large trellises for them.
HI Beth, is the pix of a already blommed cutting, or just a seed started in a pot and only grew the few inches? LOL remember this will only be my 2ed year with mg. I looked on Ebay for "shima" I didnt see any one with it listed. Have ever purchased from jmglver on ebay. Do I need to worry about seed confiscating from Tx to Indiana. Thanks Rose
Wizz, this is a plant grown from a seed. Some MGs can be started from cuttings but the usual way to grow them is from seed. This particular nil never got much bigger than this but still bloomed and produced seeds.
No worry about shipping in the USA. Buy with confidence from your seller.
Dear Beth, Actually I have rearranged parts of my garden ( I replaced the big salvia leucophylla with two smaller salvia clevelandii "Winifred Gilman") and it freed up two more fence posts. I was wondering if Ipomoea nils is a vine and can it tolerate shade? Actually my Grandpa Ott's bloomed almost all year including summer, although it didn't bloom as much in summer. I know this is a morning glory forum but actually my Black-eyed Susan vines didn't start growing bigger until September (I started them late, too). I hope they will reseed themselves for next year.
Dear wizz47,
I would like to know if the Ipomoea nils is going to grow anymore, also.
I have shipped and received seeds to Canada and almost every state in the Union when I was active in that sort of thing. I never had any problems. I hope that you don't also. I don't understand what you mean by 'shima.'
Thanks to both of you for sharing,
Chuck
Sorry, Beth!! I responded just a couple of seconds after you did. Thanks for clearing it up about that Ipomoea nil but can you tell me if others grow as big as MG vines?
Thanks again,
Chuck
Wizz is looking for Shima, the bloom pictured. It's also an Ipomoea nil and won't get as big as the purpureas. If you look up the particular cultivars in Plantfiles, and note if they are nils or purpureas, you will get an idea of how big your morning glory will get.
As per the Black Eyed Susan Vines....I believe they are short-day bloomers (like all the morning glories) and do most of their blooming AFTER the summer equinox.
