Huge storm in the islands

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Chrissy, do take care of yourself! We haven't had rain for awhile so had to go water this evening! Everything was so dry!

Hi Zany! Hope you've had a good day!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi back at ya Texasgal. We had a wonderful sunny day with crisp cold air. The fog stayed off shore this evening so DH and I took a drive all over the county looking at Christmas lights and listening to Christmas carols on the radio. We usually do this every Christmas Eve but the weather was so nice today we decided to go early.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Sounds wonderful! There used to be a subdivision over in Pasadena TX, and every single house decorated, most of them very elaborately. We used to take the kids over there closer to Christmas. It was a sight to behold!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

When I was seven we visited my Grandmother and Aunt in Dallas, TX at Christmas time. I was so amazed that it was 80 degrees in the daytime and at night the streets and driveways were lined with paper bag lumineres that went on for miles. I wonder if they still do that?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I live in Dallas. There are many areas spread over the metroplex that do the entire subdivision. The real candle lumineres are not as popular because of the fire hazhards...lots of electric substitutes. Our world is not what it used to be. In some of the areas where they have the finest home and decorations, teens are just taking hold of the light string and pulling everything down. Lots of vandalism and theft. Who would have thought that this season would encourage the worst of the worst. My neighborhood of 7 blocks is now mostly we seniors as we all moved here with babies and are still here some 40 odd years later. Too difficult to do much decorating and then there is the problem of taking it down. right now it is pouring rain and the temps are dropping. Has been in the 80's all week, presently in the mid 40's and going lower. Really does a number on the plants. Merry Christmas, all. And a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Christi

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Christi, I am saddened to hear that the vandals are attacking the decorations. Fewer people bother with them each year and those who do should not have to worry about being rewarded with that kind of stupidity.

We did get to see decorations for Christmas, Mennorahs, and some Kwanza displays. but the displays are scattered all across the county and are getting fewer each year.

I can understand the luminares switching away from candles because of the fire hazzard but somehow the electric lights would just not be the same. But it is nice to know that it is still being done. It is a beautiful tradition.

AHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - sunshine in our future!!! 4th night of thunderstorms and big dogs sleeping on our bed.

Here is one of the trees that blew down!!! The "rootball" is so shallow because it is growing on solid lava...they go OUT instead of down!

Glad to hear the sun is returning to the islands!

I thought the roots on our huge redwoods were shallow but those look like a disc! Isn't it amazing how nature adapts to allow growth on top of rocks.

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Looks like we are going to get some sun this morning too! Off to take Mom a walk along the "beach", she hasn't been out of the house for over a week. Nowhere to park cars along Kihei road yesterday because of all the deep mud still on the edges of the roads. Luckily I can park at work and we can walk across - haven't had much of a chance to see what's what yet.

How many trees did you loose Carol? I am constantly amazed at trees that will grow on solid lava and in little cracks, talk about a will to live! LOL on the dogs on the bed with you - we have full sized matresses on the bedroom floor for our pups, one each! Makes for a crowded bedroom!

Sorry we are sending the pineapple express over your way....hopefully it will have lost some energy by now.

Hopefully back later with some pics...

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OH Jenny...glad to hear you are going to be able to dry out!!! The Weather Guessers say the winds will shift to NE and then NNE this afternoon which means Trade Winds and with the foot of snow on the mountains...COLD at night when the air slips off the mountain tops and slides out to sea.

We lost a total of 14 trees. Thankfully, some of them had roots into cracks, so we top them and then use the tractor to pull them upright and with luck they will recover. We do the same to the others...and if they don't recover we leave the large stump and then grow epiphytes ON them.

BTW...I get reports from ENSO re: 'el nino and la nina' weather predictions. They are saying that la nina should continue for the next 3 months...if anyone wants the link to sign up, let me know.

a hui hou,
Carol

Sp glad that y'all are finally getting some sun! Again, sorry for the losses! Sure glad that you both are OK!

Oh those trees blowing over ...so sorry ...here is what happened here yesterday afternoon, although in our area we escaped the cricket ball sized hail we only got large marble sized ones ...look what happened not too far away. This is from a news article

A THUNDERSTORM caused serious damage in parts of western and northern Sydney yesterday, with homes in some areas battered by hailstones the size of cricket balls and thousands left without power.

Thirty women were treated for minor injuries and one was taken to hospital with chest pains when hailstones up to seven centimetres in diameter and damaging winds tore through an outdoor tea party at Kemps Creek on Sydney's western outskirts about 4.30pm.

"It looked like the end of the world. I've never seen anything like it," one woman told Channel Seven. Another said the winds lifted slabs of concrete.

Here is a picture and the weather experts are saying that we are in for a storm season, lots of damage to roofs and cars, some cars looking like someone has bashed them with a baseball bat.
Windows smashed everywhere.
So I hope everyone stays safe and sound.

Oh My Goodness Chrissy!!!!! That is really something! That hail is HUGE!

Do take care of yourself and your family! Stay Safe!!!!!

Jeanne

Jeanne I hope you and everyone stays safe!
As Bette Davis once said in All about Eve"fasten your seat belts we are in for a bumpy ride"
Lets hope our ride is not too bumpy ...whatever would we talk about if the weather was always good?
Glad when we can talk gardening again,I remember once when the hailstones stripped every leaf from every plant ...broke my heart, within a few weeks the new fresh green leaves came poking through ...a bit like life really ...sometimes it feels like the end of the World but then like the new little leaves ,hope springs eternal and life goes on :)

Sorry to hear all of the weather woes here.....Lives are still living and the cleanup and replanting are things to come....The price paid living in the zone....We all have issues with Mother Nature, be it the tropics, Snow Belt, Rain Forests....We live where we live and can't escape Nature's Wrath if she decides it's time...We can be thankful life is sustained and the recovery process makes us stronger for the next test. This community has proved that help in whatever capacity is available 24/7. The support offered here is seldom sought but always available and that's what makes life worth living. The best friends of my life I have never met face to face. I didn't meet them until I joined Daves....Good Luck kids, you know what has to be done and assistance is just a dmail away....do not hesitate.

Glad your spirits are intact, Jennie, Carol and Chrissy. If you need anything, I'm just a D-mail away.

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Sorry to hear of that awful hail, Chrissy, sound as though you had more damage than we did. It certainly is a weird year all round.

Great news! The beaches are already starting to make a come back! Four days ago the sand cliff was much taller with water right up to the bottom - now look! We are gaining the beach back already - ain't nature grand!

Oh Carol, 14 trees, that's awful. We lost only a couple of very tall papaya trunks. Most of our damage was only to the ground. You know, I have been complaining and whining about the septic system delays, good thing it wasn't done yet, horray for Maui Time!
Sun has been shining all day today, and everyone has been out in their gardens dealing with clean up. Apart from mud everywhere you wouldn't know anything had happened!
The parks next to the beaches were held together for the most part because of the beach morning glory that we have all been planting for the last couple of years. It really held the sand together beautifully, we did loose a few very large trees in some of the parks (one fell over some parked cars - they're toast of course), but the parks dept have cut them up and removed them for the most part, so we are almost back to business as usual!
John, thank you for your kind comments, they are really appreciated...
Warmest aloha to all..

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Yep...like a bad dream!!! It is over/we fix it and deal with the damage/and off we go!!!

Oh my! I feel like such a slug! Just as I leave (we did get lakes to drive through on the way to the airport!), you guys get hit with all this mayhem, and I am blissfully unaware cuz I don't even watch the news when I'm cooking! Carol, your beautiful trees!!! I hope Bob didn't loose any of his rare palms! And Jenny, ravines in your garden?!?!? Thank goodness the beaches are coming back, that is actually a gorgeous picture. I know this is many days after the chaos, but if I can send anything to help with the clean up and re-growth, just let me know. Chrissy - that hail looks mighty dangerous! Hope all turned out okay for your beautiful plants!

We have had some storm conditions out here as well, but nothing compared to what you guys have described! Sometimes we really understand the old Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times"...anyone for a little boring "same old, same old"??

Yokwe to all, and may the Holidays bring healing weather!
Shari
