This is a junk of a bird house. Really junk. It was proven by the number of years it was uninhabited - possibly even passed off. I saw this model somewhere on BHG and wanted to make one. I made using really crude materials. All it needed was two rectangular planks, two square pieces of wood, one of them with a hole, a plastic can cut open on one side with holes in its side, and one strong wire for the bird to perch. I spoke about my film projector somewhere and those two planks are remnants of that. Okay..
It had been hung out there, I think from 2004 or so, or even earlier. It has stood the vagaries of weather. I have not painted it at all - it's really crude and rough. I yearned to see some bird at least sit on this. But those sunbirds and tailorbirds always ignored my work of art! LOL. The entry holes suit their size. But yesterday, I was so thrilled to hear a Great Tit in my garden. I rushed to the window to see where it was and lo, it was right there on my art-piece, looking here and there and into the hole. So I rushed out to the door as the window has an insect mesh. Opened it slowly and through the gap, I took a few pictures of it even entering to see what accommodation was available! And to see if it was worth any penny.
My hands must have been shaking in excitement of watching the first occupant - nay - it probably rejected ..... only to inspire me to make a better one! Make I will. Well for now, here are some pictures of the Great Tit and my bird house. I've explained why my pictures here are a bit blurry!!
You have never seen my bird house before!!......
Congratulations Dinu!

Oh Dinu..love that little rustic birdhouse and the little Tit! Your pics look very clear to me too...thanks for sharing!
Birdhouse and Tit envy,
Rose
I love the birdhouse, too.
Thanks.
Marilyn,
Does that mean I have to stop thinking of my new project of a better looking housie?
Another thing my friend told me is that birds prefer openings to houses facing east. I have'nt tried this as my windows also face east. That would prevent me from shooting. Maybe I will try out in a new location.
This project I did was absolutely simple. I also painted it using the waste left overs of some other work but then they have all weathered off.
Dinu
I just love your rustic little birdhouse! Very nice collage, I hope your visitor takes up residence.
Hi Dinu, Just be careful what type of paint you use as most are toxic to birds.
A while back I was going to paint some birdhouses but decided against it; later I took down the birdhouses except for winter roosting. :-)
I prefer to leave it alone even though it looks 'odd'. But as M says, 'rustic' looks are loved by birds, I change my mind and try that way.
Okay, it's just past midnight now and I've to go to bed. See you all tomorrow.
Dinu
Another thing my friend told me is that birds prefer openings to houses facing east.
I would say that is a silly superstition! The openings on all of my bird houses face west. The birds have been using them for years. I do not paint my birds house, just leave the natural wood to weather.
Dinu,
I meant rustic in a good way. Birds like things rustic.
Marilyn
The box looks a bit on the small size for a large brood, but it is in a good predator-proof position, not easy for nest robbing animals to reach.
Another thing my friend told me is that birds prefer openings to houses facing east.
Recommended so that the hot afternoon sun does not shine directly on and over-heat the nest. That's unlikely to be a problem in Alaska, but could well be in India! But also it assumes the box is placed on a surface (tree trunk, etc) that is broader than the box, so the box is in afternoon shade when facing east.
