December Blooms..

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Beautiful hoyas. I believe David Liddle has determined that what we are calling H. multiflora is really H. javanica...either way, they are gorgeous!

Hi Doug,
I keep my house between 63 & 68 (the cooler temp when at work) . I'm wondering if it has something to do with me not fertilizing it enough. I cut back on my fertilizing on everything from Oct - Jan. Maybe this is one that I shouldn't do that for. Everything else I have in this room is doing & looking great and I haven't fertilized them either. In this rook are other Hoyas, Christmas cactus, Jade plant, Rubber plant, AV's philodendron. I think I'm going to fertilize it tomorrow. I don't think it could hurt anyway. Diluted

If you see any new growth at all, I would continue with a diluted fert. until growth picks up.

Dawn,

You keep your house exactly one degree warmer on each end than I do. It has to be the fertilizer.

Dawn...H. javanica is one that takes all kinds of light...so if it is in high light, it might want to go down a notch or two. Mine do best in low light and GOBS of water!!!!! Also, you might check it for mealie bugs on the leaves and roots...

Dianesjungle: My DS-70 is also one of the EA basket plants. When I got it a year or so ago it was labeled bilobata but was ID'd on here as the DS-70. I have another EA basket hoya that was also labeled bilobata but has been ID'd as H. brevialata. Here's a photo of that one:

Here's both the Brevialata and DS-70... I had to move a lot of plants inside last night as it got down to 38 here overnight! These two are hanging in the shower in one of the bathrooms:

Thanks Doug :)
And I agree about the care of multiflora (javanica) - I never let mine dry out. And since it never stops growing, I think year-round fertilizing is a good idea (I fertilize all my hoyas year round with a weak fertilizer anyway).

Nice hoyas Lin!

Lovely, full and healthy plants lin!

I hadn't been fertilizing at all over the colder months, but an hibiscus I have taught me otherwise. It lost all its leaves when I brought it in the house for the winter, but the odd flower still popped out. I gave it a light fertilizing because while the leaves were coming back in, they were small. Said plant now has no less than 10 blooms every day and the leaves are full and lush. I read that as it telling me "I don't want to rest, thank you very much!").

So, I started fertilizing the hoyas again too - but at half the strength of warmer months (usually 1/4 tsp per gallon of water - now 1/8 tsp per gallon - I use MSU). They're looking very, very happy, and some (heuscheliana, multiflora) have put out new buds. I guess that I've stopped not fertilzing in the colder months! (Double negative wins one!!)

Thanks everyone, fetilize it will be then.

I am so bad about not fertilizing my plants on a regular basis. I know I should be a better plant mom - maybe that will be my New Year's resolution! When I do feed, I rotate between Eleanor's VF-11 and Dyna Grow. Those are what I use on my African Violets and Gesneriad plants, so I use it on hoya's and other house plants as well. I Bought a case (6 qts) of VF-11 last February and really like it. I'm just about out, so need to order more. I have the ingredients for the beer formula (with the exception of the beer) that someone posted awhile back but have never taken the time to mix up a batch to try it.

I fed my hoya tonight some Super Thrive. That is what I had on hand other than AV food. Oh yeah, December 21 means the days start getting longer!!! yippeee

Gabi that is a magnificent Multiflora, such beautiful dark green foliage is it grown mostly in shade? the contrast of the flower makes it a stunning plant.

Roy

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Thank you Roy. It's actually right up against my balcony door, which faces east. So it gets good morning sun. The blinds are never down, and there are no trees to block it - so no, it's not grown in shade. I agree - I absolutely love how dark the leaves are. They've always been that way. When I bought an EA "multiflora", the leaves were much lighter than the javanica (multiflora) pictured above. Not sure why the leaves are so dark, but no complaints here. Thanks again for the compliments :)

Lin- My bilobata looks like the one on the right. So it's DS-70 huh? Good to know! Looks like yours is about to bloom! Wish mine would.... Maybe spring time.

(Zone 1)

Yes Diane, that one is the DS-70 and it has been blooming for a few months now. I'm sure your plant labeled bilobata is probably the DS-70 if it is one of the EA baskets! They always label plants incorrectly, not just hoya's!

Can you post a photo of your's?

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

I'll post a pic of it tomorrow if I can get a good one of it.....It's growing through my lace curtain.... so I can't move it as I haven't decided whether the plant or the curtain gets snipped! :)

Wow ... a plant that actually smells like Grape Juice? Sounds wonderful! Love the blooms on both the calycina and the H. subcalva!

Beautiful blooms! Love that subcalva - I need to get my name on the list for one of those beautiful plants!!

Karen

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Me too, Carol!! If there's a list, I'd love to be on it :) I already have 2 of them, but they are still just small rooted cutting and haven't done much since I got them. Gorgeous pics, and that tray of subcalva is just drool-worthy!

Gabi

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Hang on, Gabi...they are early bloomers...you might have something this year!!!

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Well that would be a pleasant surprise!! Out of my whole hoya collection, that is the one I want blooms on the most. Thanks again for sharing those pics.
