I'll start off with my Lasiantha/Praetorii which opened up yesterday.

Now that is one I have never heard of (among many, I'm sure) ..... lovely plant too. Very cool how those blooms hang down like that and I love the color!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I'll have to get a pic of mine (praetorii) tomorrow. It has a peduncle with 14 buds that should be open by next week sometime.

My H. cv. Mathilde is growing like a weed and producing peduncles at almost every leaf node but i'm sure I wont see any flowers on it before spring.

(Zone 1)

I never knew there were so many different and beautiful Hoyas until joining DG and "lurking" on this thread. And, I had no idea any of them were fragrant! I bought a Lacunosa last spring and love the fragrance. Bought another plant labeled hoya bella but it is also the Lacunosa. A couple of months ago I found H. nummalaroides (sp) and that one is very fragrant too!

I sure enjoy y'alls beautiful photo's!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Well I figured since I have lights in the gh and was just sitting here doing nothing,i'd go outside and get the pic of praetorii tonight so here it is!!

Plantladylin,

Since you get really excited when you see a new hoya that you never heard of, I thought you'd enjoy these sites which have tons of pictures (both blooms and foliage) and explanations of many different hoya species. There are over 300 species (something like that), so you'll always hear or see something new. And trust me, the excitement never gets old!

Enjoy :)

Also, Ted Green's catalog has some cool pictures (most of his hoyas are just described, but the pictures he sporadically shows are amazing:

Edited to add: Here's another link to Carol's catalog, which is a great reference as well:

Oh My Gabi .... Thank you so much for these links! I have seen the Myhoyas.com website before but none of the others. Some amazing plants! I'm sitting here writing down names of "favorites" to do more research!

When I first started going to the forums about 14 years ago, I was digging into my roots (ancestry) and checking out gardenweb.com to find out how to take care of all the fruit trees and plants my hubby was buying. I wanted a user ID that would take care of both. And I wanted to be a little creative. Since I dig into the past, and dig in the garden, ima_digger just fit the bill. "So that's the whole story" LOL

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

OOPS! on here I'm imadigger. my email address is ima_digger@yahoo.com

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Gabi, thanks for all those sites. Great info can be found there. It will be of great use for all the newbies just comming onto this forum.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, it is great User ID!!

Thanks for that photo Carol! I've got that Hoya, but had never seen its bloom before.

Carol ... it is just lovely. I have that one too and now I know what she will look like all grown up as well.

Can't wait for next spring maybe a few of them will be mature enough to send out a bloom. It is a long wait to get to smell the beautiful fragrances:)

Bea

Long Beach, CA

My Kunming Kina almost died, but I have 3 leaves that are now looking healthy again. Hope it makes it along. That is a pretty bloom.

Lovely, lovely flowers. I have Kunming Kina too, and just love the leaves. I've shared a cutting of it though, and it wasn't mature enough to bloom yet, so I doubt I'll see blooms for a couple of years. 8-(

I think that sp. KK blooms in the fall...or when it gets cooler - at least that is what it has done/is doing for me...

San Francisco, CA

H. calycina. Gorgeous flowers similar to H. australis, but a lot bigger. This flower is almost 1-1/2" when flattened. Very perfumey.

Mark, that is breathtaking. I have 2 calycina's, and both have a bunch of peduncles (old and new), but they have done nothing since I got these plants! Both hoyas are growing, but nothing is happening with these peduncles! I've had one since the summer, and the other I got in October. Maybe I'll see blooms next season. Or is this the time it blooms?

Beautiful Blooms!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

One of my very favorites!!!! calycina usually blooms towards the end of the year....I wonder if it is set off by 'cool'. H. albiflora is the same....magnifica too.

OOing & AWing- Beautiful bloom, Markroy!

This forum always has me oohing, aahing and drooling!

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

This is my DS-70, which bloomed yesterday. It is a double first for me - the first time that this Hoya has bloomed for me, and the first Hoya to bloom under artificial light.

My H. multiflora has not once been out of bloom since April. Even in this dismally dark December, where we have had 6 hours of sun in the last 2 weeks, it is putting on new peduncles. In the first three years that I had the plant, it would bloom only once; in May. I attribute this now constant blooming to information on its cultural requirements gathered early on from this forum - keep it moist and fertilize regularly.

Doug: Those are great photo's! I love that Multiflora! Do you use that beer fertilizer I've read about on here? My DS-70 has bloomed continuously all summer. I have just watered a lot of stuff to move inside because it's going to be cold here tonight - 39 degrees! Yikes! Tomorrow night is going to be 38. So a lot of stuff is coming inside for a couple of days. By late next week it's supposed to be back to 80 again.

Here's my DS-70 after a shower with the hose this morning! I like the fragrance okay outside - to me it's a kinda soapy smell. Inside it is too overpowering so I am putting it in the guest room and closing the door!

I have the Multiflora that another DG'er gave me in a trade a few months ago. It has blasted buds, (as I think you call it) twice and looked a bit pitiful for a few weeks. It has perked back up now so I'm assuming it has gotten acclimated to it's new home. I can't wait for blooms from that one!

WOW!! That DS-70 is gorgeous. I hope that my teensy little DS-70 will be that full and beautiful one day! Is that an EA basket?

Jeremiah

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Yes, Lin, that is a beautiful DS-70. I only have one bloom, and I can't really detect a fragrance yet. The fertilizer that I use is the one developed by Michigan State University for use with soil less plant mixes, and it works well for me, but there are any number of good fertilizers out there including the beer formula. Fertilizers can be a sticky issue with everyone extolling the virtues of their favorite formula. I think the most important thing is to use whatever one you are comfortable with using, and use it continually with a flush of plain water every 3rd or 4th watering to get rid of any salt build up.

Doug

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Both of you have beautiful DS-70s! Nice and healthy too! The leaves remind me of the EA I have labeled as bilobata. Are they related? Hope so, since yalls look so good! LOL

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Hi everyone, lovely pics! Do yall fertilize all year round? I have a multiflora that is trying to grow but the leaves are pale. It just looks like its struggeling. Is it a slow grower? I have it in a room that has a huge west facing bay window. It is a very bright room. Most of my house plants end up in that room b/c its so bright. I dont think light is the issue. I have not fiertilized it since middle of Sept. This is a cutting I got from the spring order from DL.
Thanks,
Dawn

I find multiflora to be my fastest growing hoya. Also blooming non-stop. Here's a pic I just took - there are 4 umbels in bloom (or bud)

Here's a close-up of 2 umbels together:

Dawn,

I'm no expert, but from my experiences with the plant, I think it likes to be fertilized regularly and does not like to ever dry out. I think that is probably the best advice that I can give. What temperature are you keeping it at? Mine is generally kept at a range of 60 -75 degrees depending on the time of the year. The only time my H. multiflora even looked a little bit peaked was when I had a large Fungus Gnat problem, but after I took care of them, it has just flourished.

Outstanding plant Gabi!
