seeds from 2003

Irvine, CA

Rummaging around in the garage, I found some seed packets from 2003, including strawflower and wildflower mixes. What do you think...Are they still viable?

(Zone 9a)

Could be. Depends on the seed, temperature, and exposure
to moisture.

Either way, - 2003!!! - I think that you owe them a shot. :)

I agree, I'd give it a shot. Some types of seeds may not be viable anymore, and others may have a reduced germination rate relative to fresh seed, but I bet you some things will come up so you really have nothing to lose by trying (except a little of your time!) If they look moldy or anything then I wouldn't bother trying, but otherwise it's worth a shot.

Thanks for replying. I went ahead with it, and I got 1 ONE viable seed. Any ideas on this? It was a little peculiar ; one big leaf and tiny leaf were the first to emerge. It hasn't gotten any new leaves, only the same two have gotten bigger.

How long has it had those leaves? I've found sometimes it can take a little while before the next set of leaves form, I think maybe they work on developing their roots a bit first. Some things grow real fast and you'll have the next leaves very quickly, but I've found other things can be much slower. I also wouldn't give up on your other seeds yet--unless you had planted them already before you posted your initial question on 12/1 they haven't been going for that long, lots of things take several weeks to germinate.

I love this website, and it has helped me tremendously when going through previous years' seeds. Of course storage conditions definitely affect it.
