My Vegetable Garden II

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5a)

Lookin' good Tplant! Your salad sounds super!

I also like the hat-for-scale presentation :)

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Jill. Am enjoying all my veggies with the exception of my Blue Lake Pole beans. They are supposed to be "stringless" but they were not...I do not like beans with strings because when I was a child in a hospital for nine months we had to eat all the food served and I remember gagging and choking on the strings. In those days, forties, we did not have stringless string beans!

Anyone know any true "Stringless string bean seeds?"

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5a)

Did you ever get bush beans to grow? And do you have one you like? I'm going to try again this summer (NOT with the Blue Lake #274 or whatever they were that we both had such bad luck with) with both green and wax, and see what I can get out of them.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Tplant, you might want to try picking your beans when they are small. I have found I had fewer with strings and they were tastier. I have yet to find one that is truly stringless.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I am now growing Festina stringbeans and they are doing very well. I'm going to order Jade seeds as I grew them before and they were good. As far as stringless is concerned perhaps the french filet stringbeans are stringless?

tplanmt - us norther gardeners hate your. LOL

everything looks great. congratulations on another fine crop.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi Herbie ---- Good to hear from you. I know your digging out up there but I envy you and that big Ol shade tree that you have up there in the summertime when it is broiling down here but cooler up your way. I keep picturing myself up there under that tree drinking a cold drink and sniffing that mountain air.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

t-plant the shade tree in the back and the one in the front are gone now. the back one from a storm and ther front we had cut down. i still have the big p;ine tress though adn they help.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Gonna miss that tree..Oh well! Got to cover some of my veggies tonight as we are expecting a cold snap for the next two or three nights with temps possibly into the 30's. Guess we will have to turn off the A/C and switch to heat.

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

Tplant, Bob from Boca,

I'm sure you have many veggies as I do. What are you going to do to prevent frost damage?

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Bob ---- PRAY!!!!! No foolin though, I think we will survive! It will be close though. Normally I would let the sprinklers run all night but with the water restrictions that would be out of the question for now. The tomatos are pretty tough and in my area the lows only go to the 40's so I hope it holds true. Meanwhile we are taking a terrific wind beating but all seems okay so far??????

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

I've been in Mass. for two weeks and will be home tonight at 8:00. I set up a watering system for my EB's just before I left. Hope everything is ok.!!!!!!

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

With the exception of three of my tomato plants my other veggies such as brussell sprouts, spinach, peas, stringbeans except for my pole beans about eight foot high, broccoli and golden beets which we had with dinner tonight did very well. It could have been much worse as the emergency weather report for my area was 29* and that was for about 5-6 hours.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

tplant - we are expectingt temps in the 60 degree range for the next two days. can you believe it. i havent been able to get much computer time as my BIL's 3 kids are visiting for about 10 days and that is why i don't get on much

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

ROTS A RUCK!!!

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

My peas and stringbeans are starting to come along inspite of some frost damage. I harvested some broccoli and spinach. Wanted to take pictures but rain interrupted my efforts.

after 2 or 3 days of nice weather we are getting hit with anywhere between 3 and 6 inches of snow for tomorrow.
guess will have to wait a bit longer to start my seeds. LOL

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Lookin' good!

Herbie - supposed to be a worse storm on Friday - and temps back in the teens for next weekend. The 3 day's in the 60's were nice, though, weren't they? Started to gettin' ya thinking about things to come, no? Then you see these fine photos and know it's all about to begin agin!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

In the grip of major zone envy here! LOL

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

sequee - didn't hear anything about storm on friday.

doccat5 - we will get even with all of them soon. LOL

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

Nice Mr. T. Getting ready to get my boxes ready. Just dont know what to plant besides tomatoes. I want as much bang for the buck as possible. In other words, I want some serving size amounts to come from the plants.

Im in a panic. Want to plant potatoes SO bad. I cant find anywhere that ships before the end of march and into april. That is to late. Anyone grow potatoes know where I might get some shipped sooner??
+

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Why is that to late, is that because of the zone you're in?

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

Yes. Its the zone. Says I should plant Jan. or Feb. Sweet potatoes I can plant for alot longer. I might see if I can stir up someone on the FL forum and see what they do. I also miss the garlic for the same reasons this year. Shipping doesnt start soon enough. Ill darn sure be ready in the fall tho! Not giving up on the portatoes, I know there is a way to get some.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Maybe try the organic gardening discussion. See if you can hook up with somebody that saves their seed potatoes and maybe they'll share. Don't know how you're set up for storage, but you might want to consider going ahead and ordering some, holding those so you have something to work with next year. Seed potatoes have a fairly long shelf life if properly stored. You can also try the supermarket type. Not my first choice, but you do what ya gotta do, they will grow, you just don't get the same level of production as most have been treated with a growth retardant chemical. Unless you can find a store that sells organic veggies. You could go that way. :)

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Garden Glory, your best bet in the south is the local feed and seed or farm supply stores. They have the seed potatoes in here in middle Georgia and in south Georgia many have already planted. Most retail shippers are in the frozen north and don't began shipping early. You won't have much choice of cultivar, most only carry Pontiacs and Kennebecs, sometimes Yukon Gold, but these grow well in the south. Irish potatoes are a minor crop at best in the south.

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks, Ill look around. Thanks dcat. I was going to ask the shelf life of the seed potatoes. I thought maybe if I ordered them at the end of the companies season, I would only have to hold them a few months. I hope its worth a try in FL.
