CLOSED: Is this an eggcase?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And if so, anyone know what kind of bug? And has it already hatched?
Thanks

Yep....Mantis egg case (but not the imported Praying Mantis)
Don't know if it's hatched yet

oh lucky you Kell. You won't have as many bugs eating your plants next year

This case is sort of a little like the first one. Just over an inch long. Could this be mantis too? I'm only aware of the fatter triangular ones.

Thanks OldNed. Hi Donna! I bought a couple of cases in spring and put them right near where I found this one. But if I recall correctly they were much bigger and round.

Sally, I have no clue but maybe Old Ned will come back.

Kell and sallyg,

The Mantis egg cases sold in the US are from the Chinese Praying Mantis Tenodera aridfolia sinensis

That's the one with the egg case as shown in the HYPERLINK below. This guy is well established all over the US. It's the one most often seen because of its size-lots larger than any of our native species.

I don't know how I got this far in life not knowing those were Chinese mantises.

That looks like a Stagmomantis californica ootheca! It already hatched. Stagmomantis carolina hatch for many days, so I think this ootheca still could have had some nymphs inside when you took the picture.

Thanks.. Hopefully I still have them.

Oh, sorry. Now I think it is Iris oratoria.
