Heres the other leaf.Nice and pink like the mom plant.
Learning thread...successes and failures
I am so glad I whined about no one around (LOL)
it is so much fun to see and hear everyone! Brenda, that picture will be very important. Maybe you can get it laminated before the color turns too much! She will be talked about in history as time goes on. AND...your daughter knew her!! And, you!!
Oh Brenda, did I ever goof with all your strep leaves. DON'T ANYONE REHYDRATE THEM FOR MORE THAN 10 MINUTES. But here is the good news. I called yesterday afternoon to my favorite nursery in the hill country and he as gotten in 70 new streps! Oh my, what can I say about having to go get some more streps.
The ones I have now from him are good selections...much better than I had originally thought. I will post pics sometime soon.
jannich, I am simply amazed that you can grow episcias from the leaf! I am a tad jealous!
Congratulations on that one.
Diane, you don't need much a stem to stick an episcia stolon. Some people just place them in a terrarium on the top of the soil and press gently. That is all.
This is off topic but i want to tell you that i spent the entire morning cleaning up the front porch to make room for many more plants when the time comes. (It is still not cold yet)
I need many more places for hanging baskets but I don't have the molly bolts and the screws and s hooks yet.
The first thing i did was to grab a hanging basket of Creeping Charlie and bees came out everywhere and stung me on the left pointer finger 3 times....same finger!
I ran and got the bee killer that sprays 25 feet and killed both the plant and all the bees (LOL)
The next endeavor was to move the brugs so they could get more light this winter. Those fire ants were all over me stinging even under my shirt , my neck and just alll over my body. I ran and jumped in the shower as fast as i could because I could not get them off of me. They make those big white blisters where they sting.
But............for the good news I did make progress making room for more plants......
I didn't quit working until my hand got this swollen from the bee stings.........(smiling as I look for a little sympathy......hope the camera will show my 'wounds' )
***Brenda, you were the first person to tell me that you could divide streps. Now I can't wait for some of mine to get big enough to try what you did. At least your wilted pic won't get me discouraged if mine look that way the first time.
Gosh Gail! I'm glad you are OK after being bee stung AND fire ant stung! OUCH!!!
I lived in Georgia with my brother for a while years ago, and I HATED fire ants. It gets too cold for them here in (my part) of Virginia, and I'm glad!
What a terrible experience!
Karen
Nah......I am used to it but it does hurt when your skin is so stretched.
Brenda, I feel badly as i talked you into one of those plastic covers. I can't use them for propagating but they are great for small babies potted up as it does raise the humidity enough to keep them warm also.
Semprvi it's been about 18 years since I sat across a table from Barbara Morgan at a parent teacher conference so I don't know about "knowing" her. LOL But it is fun to see where she has gone and all she has accomplished! She is considering coming back here to McCall to teach when she finishes all her other duties, that would be something!
Yeow!!!! Gail I know it hurts worse than it looks and it looks bad! My grandmothers always used a baking soda paste to draw out the pain from bee stings......
No need to feel bad over the mini greenhouse. It may be no good for starting leaves (for me) but you are right, it's great for small starter plants like my hoyas and any that need some TLC.
I do so love and envy you that beautiful porch area full of plants!
Yes Jannich, the crunchy leaves only seems to happen to my bigger episcias, I should do an experiment and put them into that mini green house and see if the big ones start looking any better??
Hi Ya Kim....here are some babies I'm excited about. They are growing from suckers that I took off of a chimera Victorian Ribbons. So there is a chance that they will bloom true from what I understand. I can't wait to find out, it's a fun experiment...
~Brenda
Brenda, you did it! Now tell us how you did the cut. It looks like more than one cut?
Fantastic as I am still scared. I have to try!
Nope, no crown cutting for me yet....when I transplanted Victorian Ribbons I noticed two small suckers growing from the main stem and I used a xacto knife and nicked them out. They were very small back then.....this was at the beginning of the summer.
I never thought the suckers were going to do anything but I left them be and low and behold after about 4 months I started seeing new growth come up. Now we'll see when they bloom if the suckers do indeed bloom true on a chimera!
~Brenda
Oh they will, I promise you. A sucker is all you need.
I am jealous but i think I am going to use a sharp knife and cut out the center like Snowrose did on the thread that Critter gave us. Let me see if I can find real quickly again.
Here it is, Brenda.

Good grief! I go run a few errands and come back to all heck breaking loose! Gail, I have to tell you first, I LOVE YOUR PORCH! But, honey, good grief, that looks painful! And fire ants too?! YOUCH!
Well, some of my errands involved buying a new set of shelves and some plant lights. An aquarium for a terrarium. And cups. I couldn't find Solo brand and couldn't find 2oz. SO got cheap brand and 9oz ones. If nothing else, I'll cut the tops off the cups to make them shorter. I'm getting ready to propagate and grow!
Diane, I don't like the Solo brand cups anyway . I use the brand that you find at Walmart in the section where they sell those bathroom dispensers and cups for brushing your teeth. They are easier to make holes in and I like them better anyway.
Dart makes a 31/2 oz but that is too large for me to put babies in the first time. I have been ordering them the Violetshowcase but not any more. They are too expensive and I love the ones people use in those dispensers for water.
If I really wanted to be dramatic, Diane, I would take a picture of my hand now. The swelling has gotten much worse and spreads across my entire top of hand. I can't move my fingers to make a fist at all. So...I just looked and found some Benadryl. That will do the trick.
I am so excited for you to have shelves and plant lights! I still need to go by Walmart and get some fixtures and lights for the two stands I brought in from the front porch to make more room out there for big plants to overwinter..
Wal-Mart is my store of choice! That's where I went. They only had the paper kind in those 3oz. Decorated with Sponge Bod and that sort of thing. That's why I bought the Wal-Mart brand of 9oz plastic cups. Do the paper cups work? I rally need to domore organizing of the plants I already have. Just not enough time! I recently(last week!) stepped down from my manager position at work to go part-time. But all that's done for me so far is cut my hours less than 10 a week and my pay by a lot. Still am having the same responsibilities heaped on me. And still am working 5 days a week! Sundays and Fri being my days off. We also have extended hours right now until 9 at night because we sell live c-mas trees so i have to work late at night as well! Ok I'm through complaining now. Thanks for listening! LOL
I love your posts, Diane......paper cups are lousy. I wouldn't use those. 3 ounces if what I use for most things.....seeds, cuttings, babies of leaves, etc. but they are some kind of plastic.
Maybe you need to talk with your boss about having to train new people and get paid less than you were. Good luck!
So no paper ones. I will be cutting down my 9oz'ers!
How long do you think it will take for the swelling to go down? I've never been stung by bees or wasps before. And probably a good thing since every one in my family I know of is allergic! I read above where someone mentioned baking soda paste. My g-mother did that for ant stings. Mixed bleach and baking soda. Worked for my son to take the hurt out when he got into an ant bed at about the age of 5.
And you wouldn't be dramatic posting a pic of your poor aching hand! That's what friends are for- to be there when you need anything- as I'm sure all here would agree!
Wow ... Gail, you really did get Bee stung, didn't you?! I hope the Benydryl helps! I too have always used a paste of baking soda/water for stings. I even keep a box of baking soda in the first aid kit on board the boat ... works for jelly fish stings too! I've heard some talk about using vinegar or meat tenderizer too ... neutralizes the toxin.
If that swelling isn't down by tomorrow I hope you will go to the doctor!
Oh, Fire Ants too! Wow! You got a Double Whammy today! Ant bites are no fun either! We have those darn fire ants here in Florida and they are awful. I am always barefoot and have gotten into ant piles many times when in the yard ... I usually will grab the hose to wash them off or dunk my feet in the pool ... those little buggers can really leave welts that hurt!
AWWWW Gail, I'm SO sorry that happened to you. It looks SO painful my friend.
What an AWFUL experience :(
I can feel your pain just by the picture :(
Well.....Your nails look GREAT! LOL
It doesn't even look like your hands are from the same person. I am wincing in pain just thinking about how that must feel! Every time I look at the pics again I say OUCH!
Diane and Lin,
For whatever it is worth, my hands stay in dirt all day long and every day of the week! So I just go get acrylics put on every 3 weeks. If you look closely you can still see the dirt under my nails. I have worn them for almost 40 years and never had an infection or any problem. Never brag, Gail! You will find yourself with a problem with the acrylics.
The cute Vietnamese girl who does my nails still laughs when i come in with so much dirt under my nails........
I used to have my nails done. Really miss that! I didn't have any problems with mine either, except for when I would get them caught in the kitchen cabinet door handles. That hurt! Cracked a few that way. Don't think I could wear them now with all the heavy lifting and things I have to do in my job now. But one day again maybe...Makes me feel kinda pampered too which is nice!
This is weird as I have friends who pop theirs off or tear them all the time. This gal must be good because I have never lost one since she has been doing my nails.
Her husband is the pedicure person and they have chairs that massage your back up and down from the turning of the head all the way down to your lower spine.
Not one time have I have ever NOT fallen completely asleep while he massages your feet and legs. Off the top of my head that is really my only pampering I can't live without.
I think the secret is getting your own nails so thin and the acrylic nail just as thin or thinner. She really uses a lot of different 'sanders' as i call them.
Oh, Gail, ouch! I got some nasty stings from saddleback caterpillars earlier this summer, so I can definitely sympathize (and nothing so clown-cute as those cats should sting like fire!). I was glad to read you got out the benedryl -- hope it helped! Baking soda and peroxide makes a good soak... and if you've got any sort of cortisone cream, that probably wouldn't be bad to use either to reduce any local allergic response. Yikes!
Very clever with the acrylic nails! The most I've done is to apply a good dark color of nail polish if I need to hide the dirt that just won't scrub out during spring/summer when I'm in the garden all the time... it's especially startling to see me with nail polish that color because I usually don't wear polish at all, LOL, but it does hide the clay stains! I think a manicurist would run screaming...
I love the blues, purples and pinks best of all! Look at the shape of the bloom!
Oh my goodness Gail.I hope your hand feels better today.
Oh jeepers, there it is! LOL... I'm glad Gail spotted the call I put here... I sure did mean to post it on the Bingo thread! (It's there now.)
Sorry for any confusion. I wasn't trying to play hide & seek... just had too many tabs open on the browse, and the cats were leaping around distracting me! Yes, that's it, it's the cats' fault! LOL
You can post those beautiful pictures here any day, critter. We love them.
