I'm glad to hear you live in Christmasland and NOT Grinchland!!
Is it just me?
Ah growin, that is beautiful! Somebody put all them purty bows on them purty trees....or is that a new variety? grin
Hello all my Canadian and American gardening fanatic friends!
I'm new to the forums, chose daylilies to start with, and have had nothing but positive responses so far. It's great to have somewhere to chat about plants and not see someone's eyes glaze over because they're not into the same thing. I learned so much in the past few weeks about daylilies, by following the threads. The snow is coming down for the first time today and I've got garden 2008 on my mind!
Yep, this IS the place!!! LOL, welcome so glad you found us! When it's winter the next spring garden is all most of us have on your mind, well... besides composting, lasagna beds, winter sowing... am I seeing a pattern here?
Hi a5footsea and welcome. I have a daughter who lives in Vancouver. Maybe next time we're out there we can meet. She's expecting our first Vancouver grandchild in June; so we might get there more often.
Ann
a5footsea, I laughed at your description of "eyes glaze over" - when I was relatively new to gardening, I had someone visit me for the first time, in the middle of summer, and her offhand comment about being interested in gardening caused me to give an impromptu garden tour, with many helpful comments on which plant liked what conditions, their bloom time, water requirements, etc - I was still in that beginner flush of giddy enthusiasm and delight with all the flowers. (I like to think that now I bore people about gardening on a different level)
My DH still likes to tease me about kidnapping that poor woman and taking her on a forced march, and torturing her with more information that she could ever have wanted to have.
Yes, I know if people are NOT into gardening when they step onto my porch, and from there they can see into small but beautiful beginnings of a garden. IF they don't ask to see more, I know!!!
a5footsea,
Welcome to the forum.
Those not into gardening, still like to wander around and ask questions. Those that don't usually have a very "short" visit. I'm old, don't waste my precious time. I've been know to hand whosomeever a trowel if I'm super busy and explain those are veggies/flowers, those are weeds.........get the weeds out. Thanks, kissy, kissy. Most of my friends are just as much a plantalcoholic as I am so it's usually not a problem. My poor DIL's though, god love em, they do try, but they aren't real interested, but I actually did give one some how to make jelly lessons this summer. We had apples up the kazoo and she wanted some homemade jelly. Her mom doesn't do canning anymore, so we had a lovely time.
Welcome aboard a5footsea! This thread is turning into quite a journey - who knows where it will take us next :-)
Maybe it will take us somewhere warm??
Taking us to Vancouver Island where poor Campbell River had a snow dump of 47cm. Hope Sandy has a snow shovel and no flat roof. Reminds me of my first visit to Victoria. Instead of househunting/visiting Butchart and other Christmassy activities, spent time shovelling off flat roofs, playing monopoly, building a snow fort.
Welcome to a5footsea. I'll have to do some reading tosee your garden faves.
inanda the other Ginny
Please, please do keep the snow and your dam Canadian cold front! It's making us all cold here..........LOL The weatherman is calling for sleet and freezing rain on Wed. Hopefully, he'll be a liar as usual, but I'm digging out my old sheets and blankets to do some cover if I have too.
It is indeed interesting where this one is going. And it didn't curl up its toes and die when I spoke up. LOL
Orchestra rehearsal tonight is cancelled because of the incoming storm coupled with the director not feeling 100%. It's a serious cancellation as the concert is in two weeks. I'm now trying to figure out what to do about the viola sections rehearsal I was planning to lead at my house this afternoon. Think I'll go with majority rules and if they think it's useful we'll have it. One has an hour drive (lives near Sandy) and she'll have a good excuse not to come.

we had some light sleet last night....luckily didn't amount to anything
made for a good reminder to have the oil tank topped off :-)
Oh warm would be good. I think it has been about -20C or thereabouts the past several days. Supposed to warm up this evening and for a day or too ( i.e. maybe even to -10C?!) But right now is when I have to go out and warm up the car and go to a Xmas potluck - the lst of 4 this week! (I dont have a garage so the car will be a tad cold and since I dont have to go far it wont really wamr up either!) Darn!
Have not walked the dogs since Thursday! They dont even want to stay out in the yard very long.
doccat5, the weather we're getting here in Ontario is from a Colorado low :-) We are under a snow squall warning for pretty much all of Ontario, and it's getting nasty out there. Forecast is for up to 20 cm today, up to 20 cm tonight, and up to 20 cm more tomorrow with blowing and drifting and periods of zero visibility. Yech!
We are snowed in here, I called Hubby in sick. The puppy stepped off the steps and vanished, she is not impressed!! Nice to know we can blame Colorado for this one :)) Still snowing hard, there is no way the car is leaving the driveway today.

LOL!!! I can just imagine the look on the poor girl's face. Kind of like when one of my kittens falls in the bathtub and looks at me as if to say, "Why'd you go and push me in the tub?"
I was watching the weather forecast. Be careful, guys and I know you know how to deal with the snow. And staying home is always smart. We had a rain most of yesterday starting in the late morning. We need the moisture desperately as we've had water restrictions here and all the surrounding counties for some time. But it was one of those days where the chill just goes right thru. I threw together some turkey and noodle soup in the slow cooker, fired up the bread machine and DH and I pigged out watch DVDs in the evening. It was great!
my husband wanted me to put weights in my youngest daughter's pockets because she's such a pixie & the wind is really blowing hard this morning
doccat5...it is a perfect soup day today too.....now i know what to fix for dinner :-)
if i lost my dogs in the snow that would be really something as they are great pyrenees...the weather has been bad enough that all i could see were dark eyes and noses!
Across the river in Gatineau (province of Quebec), all school are closed. Here in Ottawa, they are open (read they get $$$ from the Province if they stay open), but no school buses are running which means people might as well keep their kids home anyway because the schools will only be babysitting.
threegardeners - we're only about an hour away from each other and the weather is similar. DH just shovelled driveway and said about 20 cm overnight. With more snow expected, my two snowshoeing partners and I were talking yesterday about getting out on snowshoes BEFORE Christmas this year.
Rehearsals yesterday were cancelled and I will need to spend some time today practicing...

Oh, wow, I love just about all dogs. But I had a friend in MN that bred Grand Pyrenees. They were such loves. My Boston's would not be happy campers with that much snow. LOL Well, except Sassy, who goes totally bonkers when we have even a bit, she runs around the yard like a mad thing. The other's are looking at her, like what IS the matter with you? Mom, mom, let us in, it's cold out here! LOL
Just reading your posts Ginny..I've been on several threads and felt that although I commented frequently, was totally ignored..however, I've been on many threads that I feel the participants are like family..just love them to bits..so would say it's not the norm...
I know. It's just some threads and some subjects. Most are friendly to the extreme :-)
I suspect that nobody intends to slight someone, but occasionally there is so much going on that some topics get overlooked. I've been known to bump up threads that I feel need more discussion or even to repost them with a different title that might grab more attention. If you think about how you look at the posts here, if we all looked at everything, we'd never get anything else done. I know I'm guilty of totally ignoring some threads base on the subject just because I know I don't have time to read everything. But the temptation if there to say "why me?" LOL
