and is that SNOW? shhhhh

Oh, I so love guineas! They are 'musical', though, aren't they?

Mine march all around - they sound like protesters demanding more bugs or something!

Beth, Our group of 8 do the same as yours. They circle the house ...... then hop the fence and circle the perimeter ...... then hop my neighbors fence and eat the feed he sets out for the turkeys. We hardly need to feed our guineas at all. LOL ! Good neighbor Mike doesn't care because I pay for half the feed. I have a blonde colored guinea just ever so slightly darker than yours. What "official color" is yours ? I see it is nearly white but kinda obvious it is not a pure albino. Well I did a bit of looking at a color chart. Seems like yours is white ..... just not totally albino. I'd like to have add a chocolate or buff colored guinea to our flock. Maybe next year.

Hi, Photographer! I have no idea what Blanche's official color is, I hatched my guineas from eggs I bought from ebay last summer, and of the 10 surviving guineas, 2 of them are light colored - the other light colored one is more of a very light grey, and you can see the pattern on his feathers better. All the rest seem to be regular old Guinea Fowl. I did have one that was whiter than Blanche, but an owl got her before we finished covering the run with chicken wire. They free range all day, but they go into the run at night and roost with the chickens in the coop.

Beth, White anything are sitting ducks to most predators. They stand out in a crowd ..... just remember why blondes have more fun. My blonde guinea is a roo and most of the girls follow him around vs. the other guy. Kelly

These are my girls, do your hens sound like they are saying "butt-crack"?

Oh my gosh, LoraK - yes! My husband said that yesterday - they march around saying butt-crack! I was afraid that I would offend people if I mentioned that here! LOL

BTW, LoraK - I love that picture! I think your girls are a little older than mine - they have more developed thingies!

Beth & Lora, Mine say buckwheat ...... sounds like some have vivid imaginations. BUCKWHEAT is the official word that most guinea people say their guineas are pronouncing. Butt-crack would offend some but not me. My wife wants me to shoot the guineas and to stop shooting the rabbits. They are literally eating our 3 Pink Almond Bushes down to the ground. I have control of the shot gun and no guineas are gonna get shot. Kelly

Do guineas usually bother ornamental plants, or vegetables? I've heard they eat mainly bugs. I can't decide whether or not to try raising them, as I have some nice flower beds and a vegetable garden.

well, consider that they need their own space, get the book & see what the expert 'frit' has to say about it...

I've already ordered it.
Sounds like great reading!

It's a must read if you want some guineas! I'm thrilled with mine. So far, they only eat their feed and bugs, I'm crossing my fingers that I can get them to eat bugs in the garden this summer and leave my veggies alone.
