Lily seed giveaway

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

It's that time and I have extra seeds. But unfortunately not a lot of seed so I'll make this offer for folks who didn't receive seeds from me last year. It will be a mix of trumpet lily seeds from lily parents that are white, purple, pink, yellow, yellow with pink edge, etc.

Just dmail me your address and I will send you a packet!

Here is a link to seed starting instructions. This is just my way that works well for me and my limited space. Others have their own favorite methods which are equally successful.

Edited to add link.

Cool! I have never seen lily seeds. I looked at your previous thread regarding growing instructions and have just the right "nursery" spot for them. Sending you a dmail.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

That's great news, John! I'm really looking forward to seeing what these seedlings look like!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Pard has some great seeds to try. I'm hoping you have some more interest. This is where I started and I have had so much fun with it.

I still have enough seeds for maybe 10 more giveaways. There are other places on DG where I could post this and they would all be gone in a New York minute, but I like the idea of folks wandering here, maybe learning a bit more about lilies, and getting the seed starting instructions.

Magnolialover, I'm looking forward to seeing what comes from that American West X Greisbach Tet Apricot trumpet!

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

i'd like to try some...don't think that i have received any from you before...i'll d-mail :-)

Lebanon, OR

I would too:) if you have any left

Me too, pard. I just hope I made the right decision planting it out. I mulched them all good and will cross my fingers.

As you might tell, I have had waaaaaay too much fun with this. These are my seedlings and scales that I started in the winter of '07. They really grow up pretty fast ;)

It's amazing to me, what comes from a seed, so much promise.

Oh my, Mags. I thought I was going to have problems finding room for my seedlings from Pard's seed. But you, you must have 10x what I have.

Planning a whole new garden perhaps? They sure look healthy.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Lefty. I'm still learning, but am sure loving it. Let's hope they make it planted out through the winter. Oak mulch and all. Keeping my fingers crossed. Lefty, where do you put your seedlings?

Pard's seeds look so good compared to when I try to get seed. I am serious, she has the knack for this seed stuff.

I have to agree with that her seeds are high quality. But comparisons aren't always relevant. Which species, which hybrid, which cross can have just as much if not more of an impact on seed size, viability and vigor.

I received three different crosses from Pard, and they truely must have been good ones, because they took off from the get-go, even though I only miracid fertilized once. The three pots looked like the bigger ones in your last pic, and I planted each pot's contents without pulling the individual plants apart. Partly because I'm lazy, partly because of room contraints and partly because I want to see first hand what Ruth and Hugh Cocker says will happen: that the plantlets will migrate apart all by themselves. I do have lots of othe lilies that look the size of your first two pics, and I didn't plant them out. They will spend another season in the pot. But theses are all species lilies and don't have the vigor that hybrids do.

My little potted lilies, along with a couple hundred other potted materials of all sizes get put in 3x4x5ft box frames that are covered with hardware cloth to keep out varmints. I will do this probably in another couple weeks when the ground actual is cold and is at least starting to freeze. Then everything goes in, the box closed and a tarp loosely covering it until it gets really cold, nowadays about Christmas week. The tarp is on because I don't want any moisture on the pots or in the soil. So around Christmas the tarp comes off, a blanket over and then the tarp again, down tightly for the rest of the winter. You never have to worry about it getting too cold, only too warm, which is why I need to wait so long to cover it for good. The same idea goes for mulch the garden too, IMO. Keep the cold in, not the warm in. My gardens are NOT mulch yet.

These are so pretty! Can't wait to have some of my own. :)

pard...you have d-mail.

Boy, this is keeping me busy... lol.

About my seeds, the reason they "seem" to be high quality (beside the fact they have good parents) is I always separate the chaff and candle for embryos before sending them out. So with diploid trumpets that should give close to 100% germination.

I'm with Lefty on his seed observations. I have collected seeds of all different sizes and size doesn't seem to matter. Pardies had comparatively tiny seeds and I get close to 100% germination on those. Orienpet and tetraploid crosses can make what looks like good seed but I usually get low germination on them.

Lefty, it sounds like you have a really good setup for overwintering your seedlings and a keen sense for what they need (and don't need-- warmth!). Most of my potted seedlings are stored on my covered front porch where they are protected from the incessant PNW winter rains. If a really cold snap is in the forecast I put a blanket over them. I'm sure my neighbors think I am really weird; they just don't understand my devotion (obsession?) with lilies!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You see, I'm still learning.....

I do have a couple orientals that I did not plant out. They just looked too small to me. Perhaps I shall try ye Lefty's method on those ;) Thanks for all of your tips.

I'm one of those "learn by doing" people. It's like I need one of you to come over here and show me how to transfer pollen and then collect the seed when it's time. Lol!

Pard, I believe they'd be calling you the lily freak, those neighbors of yours. hee hee.

Seriously though guys, thank you for all of the tips and education.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

One more word on my method:

When nights get cold, below 20-25F, my stuff usually ends up with a stint in the garage before I put them in the boxes. There is usually a return of relative warmth before the cold putside temps stay for good, when I put them in the boxes. Plus the soil under the boxes is colder than too, rather than being insulated by the potted materials. I really do struggle to keep enough cold in the boxes through the early spring.

It is really surprising how much cold the pots can endure. One year my pots got caught in the garage while single digit temps raged outside. Don't forget, I use the garage for what it was meant for too, and the garage door is opened at least twice a day. And one of those times would be 3:30am when I go to work. Temps inside the garage were in the low teens. I didn't see any difference in survival that year compared to others.
