What is Your Thanksgiving Menu This Year?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

but i love that your address line makes it look like you are in the southeast northeast!
; )

North Augusta, ON

Isn't NE=New England? If I remember right. New England is pretty North East ain't it?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No - it's Northeast.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Victor!!

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Its Northeast of what, Victor?

:-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Of Southwest.

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

And definitely northeast of Nebraska.

North Augusta, ON

uh oh---so if NE is Nebraska, what's the short form for New England???

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Duh - I just realized 3G's post was in response to McGlory's! Sorry, I was not saying Northeast over Nebraska. I was replying directly to 3G's guessing that the NE in the Forum name meant New England.

I was wondering why I was being scolded again! Sorry.

McGlory - I have said on numerous occasions, if you're northeast of somewhere, someone or something, you are always welcome here.

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Oh, good! I'm northeast of Colorado. But I still can't figure out how I got here. :-)

North Augusta, ON

so NE is New England????

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

now that is a profound question.
edited to say - mcglory's, not 3gardeners'

A TRIP TO THE BUTCHER

One glance at the shelves made us irky,
Each sported a humongous turkey.
Now a roast beast is fine for a Grinch,
But to finish it off is no cinch.
And with only two people to bite 'em
Big birds can last ad infinitum.
And too recently we'd had a yen
For a gamey Rhode Island hen.
So what fowl deed could we excuse?
We finally came home with a goose.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I am laughing!
Great poem, once again, Don

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Ooooo - I've never tried goose. How do you cook it?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Don! That's perfect! Tomorrow I am cooking a medium sized turkey (well I have cooked 38 pound tom turkeys before, and this one is only about 20 lbs) Anyway, there is only myself, David and DD - all our family is in BC.

so the turkey IS going to last ad infinitum!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow! We're having 10 people and we have a 15 pound turkey.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I have a 6 3/4lb breast for the two of us. And of course, Wallingford and Holly will get some of that.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would love to get an opening line like that!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor!!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Man, would I be thankful!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

You'd look a bit silly - but, hey - go for it!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

We have everything traditional plus lasagna, anti pasta, and artichokes. Guess my background.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Vegetarian?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

My grandparents came from Vegeteria?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

is anti pasta pasta in another dimension?
i have always been pretty pro-pasta myself.

YankeeCat, you cook it just like turkey--some prefer a slower oven, and some use a higher temperature. The main difference is that a roasted goose produces a whole lot more fat than a roast turkey. You need to prick the skin all over, and drain off the fat while cooking.

The first time I roasted a goose, I neglected this detail, and when I removed the bird from the oven, some grease slopped over and I literally slid into the dining room, clutching the roasting pan. My guests were surprised that I kept my footing!

Emily ~
I'm amazed, too! I'll bet that there were plenty of gasps and then lots of laughter. And, that day will certainly be one that's made a lot of memories!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

The anti-pasta dissolves the carbs from the pasta. Many people confuse it with ante-pasta, which is the pasta you put up before anyone deals when playing poker.

Did that work for a recovery?

Beer and turkey.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

a 6 pd chicken, a large spiral cut glazed ham, garlic mashed potatoes, chopped yams with crumb topping, green bean casseole, carrot slaw, pistachio salad, sweet potato pie and pecan pie. anything extra will be brought by family. hoping they will remember to bring rolls, relish tray and a veg!!!!

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

My gas oven being rescued last week, I served a roasted 15 pound turkey {had a great coupon so I bought bigger than I usually do},stuffing, gravy. Roasted red potatoes and roasted sweet potato slices, Buttercup squash and apple, baked in the squash, green bean casserole {hubby's fave}, homemade whole berry cranberry sauce and cranberry apple sauce. I wimped and used wheat brown and serve rolls. Homemade pumpkin pie and cranberry ginger bread for dessert. I didn't have to do a vegetarian "turkey" loaf this year since my vegetarian niece was at another dinner. But this is mostly a vegetarian holiday anyhow, so not such a biggie when she comes to dinner. white wine for hubby and I and the kids had soda. The roasted potatoes are a new twist this year as I have done baked or mashed in the past. I saw the recipe for the roasted sweet potatoes the other day and i liked it. I have enough food left over so i don't have to cook at least three meals over the weekend. The leftover squash is going into some muffins tomorrow morning for breakfast. This is my fave food holiday.

We ended up with roasted sweet potatoes and soy milk pumpkin pie from my girlfriend, turkey breast crusted with dijon mustard, lime juice and chopped pecans, ginger pumpkin-pear soup, baby spinach and red grapefruit salad, whipped carrots and parsnips, stuffing with oysters and sausage and orange-ginger cranberry sauce. We didn't have bread because the ready-to-bake loaves I bought were ravaged by the cats before I had a chance to bake them. Then we sat down to watch a movie and my VCR didn't work! So we saw the new Denzel movie - American Gangster.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Did you like it?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I love Denzel and think he is a fine actor. And I like learning more about history that is not always included in the text books - I "knew" about Bumpy - but not the character that Denzel played. But as usual, I shut my eyes during the heavy violence scenes. I just don't think it is necessary to make the audience watch the killing of a whole room of people to tell a story. The link between drugs in Harlem and the Viet Nam war shocked me - I am soooo naive (at 60 no less!). Some good points were made about drugs really being a "business" and that is cause for thought. So, to get back to your question - I thought it was worth my time and the $10 but I wouldn't watch it again.

Why is it that Thanksgiving takes hours, sometimes days, to prepare ... and then 25 minutes to eat? LOL! Just pondering here, but that's something I have always wondered about.

I sincerely believe that Thanksgiving is totally about family and friends, rather than the survival of the cook(s).

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanksgiving takes several days here since I have ample leftovers. I am not cooking today either. so It works out with the prep time.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

That really IS a good question to ponder, Candyce! We, too, will be eating Thanksgiving dinner for days here.......no problem from me......less meals to have to conjure!!

And Candyce - your table looked REALLY lovely!!!
