Oh, I'm so glad you and Gail are going to play! I will look for your cards sometime later today or tonight! Critter left for N.C. this morning .... don't know how long of a trip it is for them but I'm sure she will be on her laptop and communicating with us later this evening or tomorrow morning!
Well, I better get on with my baking! Have my Ipod in my pocket and my headphones on so I'm ready! I'm not accomplishing as much as I had thought I would! Got a batch of cookies made and am getting ready to make Pumpkin Bread now .... then on to a Cream Cheese Pound Cake and more cookies! I will be done eventually! LOL.
Happy Holidays AV BINGO game
OOOOH it all sounds SO good! I have tomorrow off to bake all day long and am going to prepare the pie crust when I get home from work today so that is one less thing I have to do. I make my own crust and if it's made ahead of time it's alot easier. I love baking the day before Thanksgiving. Everyone has their favorite "Kim please make me's" *lol* I didn't even know this but my nephew said to my mother in law "Is Aunt Kim going to make cherry pie?". I wasn't planning on it because I thought I was the only one that liked it but now that I know Hazen is looking forward to it......you know I will be making one *lol* I love this time of the year!
Hope you all have a GREAT one if I don't check in before then. I know I will though :)
Wow, all this baking, I sure am glad my oven's broke!!
The bottom element blew, I can cook, but I can't bake.
Heya! We're in NC and getting into the festive spirit!
Lin, how are we doing on players? I'm glad Gail & Cedar decided to join us! Cindy, I hope you'll reconsider... there won't be 15 calls until next week, so you don't have to worry about getting behind and missing a Bingo! win over the holiday weekend.
We're having some trouble with our connection here... but my DH has been trying all day to fix it, and I sure hope he's successful. He thinks that this thing he's put together shoudl do the trick... cross your fingers that it does, because if it doesn't, we might have to delay our start until next week, and that would bum me out!
I hope everybody is having a lovely day!!
Hi ya Critter! Glad you and your hubby had a safe trip! I think we have 14 or 15 players so far! I will check my list and update the players list in my above post in a few minutes! Got Pumpkin Bread in the oven and I need to check on it!
Be right back!
Jannich just sent her card in .... looks like we have 16 players so far! I can't edit anymore today ... guess I've reached my daily quota! If I receive any more Bingo cards today I will edit showing their names tomorrow!
...... back to the kitchen!
Great! I'm hoping that Jim's got this internet connection stabilized, and then we're good to go!
I can't wait to see photo's of some of those on your master list! It's all I can do to keep from googling some of them! LOL. Guess it's good that I'm busy baking for Thanksgiving .... too busy to do much else!
I'll be back later!
Got my card in! How are you doing for prizes Critter?
Whew! I almost missed out on this! Just happened to stumble on the thread....My card is in!
ackkk, I forgot all about it----scrambling here, don't start without me!!!
Lin-I just read I was supposed to put Holiday Bingo Card'in the subject line- I only put 'Bingo' -Do i need to re-dmail?
No Diane ... I got your card! You're all set!
Got Threegardeners card too ... will update the player list tomorrow cause I'm over my edit list for the day!
It's going to be a great game .... Good Luck Everyone!
BINGO!!!!!
Ok ..... Here we go! Isn't it Janet who is usually the one jumping the gun? LOL.
woohoo!!!!!
Yes, it is Janet. Where oh where is Janet.
B I N G O !!!!!!!!!!! Darn it, I got second place!!!!! LOL Threegardeners was too quick for me! LOL
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
There you are
LOL!
Apologies for the delay in starting... it's been a busy day here, and Jim still hasn't gotten the connection working from my laptop... I really want to post a photo with the first call, so I'm going to try to do that when we get back from our grocery run... we need Thanskgiving feast fixin's!
I did remember to warn you that I post calls at random and unpredictable times, right? :-)
So... anybody started cooking/baking for tomorrow yet?
AAARGH!!!
We are continuing to have dreadful problems with the internet connection here. I am typing really quickly, because I have caught a ride on the neighbor's connection... but it's a faint signal that cuts in and out (yes, he knows I'm surfing on his signal and is fine with it, but no, he doesn't really want me camping out in his living room).
To top it off, First Class (newly installed on my laptop) has decided to crash. That means no pretty pictures until I get back to my desktop machine. :-(
DH says he will see what he can accomplish in the morning, but I don't want to start posting calls and then bring things to a crashing halt when I can't get back online...
I'm starting to think that I might have to apologize profusely and make the first call when we return on Monday night. If so, I hope I'll be forgiven!
Somebody (Jannich?) asked about prizes... So far, we've had donations of:
A 1 year membership to AVSA.
Kim's fabulous "Victorian Lady" crocheted Kreation.
There are no rules for prizes for this Bingo... they don't have to be plant related... so if you have an idea for something, drop me a Dmail. But don't think you need to donate a prize in order to play -- this is all about having fun!
Gail was planning to ship a prize box of plants to one of our Bingo winners, but she's had a rough week, so Lin will be in touch with her later on to see what she wants to do.
By all means, Monday will be fine! Just enjoy your Thanksgiving and we can begin our craziness on Monday...lol Sorry to hear Gail is having a bad time .... hugs, Gail!
Finally finished with round one of cooking! After a tough day at work( big plant shipment)unboxing labeling giving everything a drink then finding a place for them-whew! Christmas tree shoppers- anyway... just finished making all my pies 2 apple 2 pecan 2 pumpkin - turkey is in it's pan ready to be popped in the oven early morning now time to relax for a few hours... you all know what I mean!LOL
I'm sitting very close to the window, making the most of a little connectivity to the neighbor's internet again... DH is crawling around behind his dad's desk, trying "one more thing" to get the connection working right.
My MIL is busy as can be in the kitchen, whirling pecans in the food processor for her sweet potato casserole, cubing cheese for her mac 'n cheese, etc. As soon as she's ready for a break, I will whisk the turkey into the kitchen and get get it all stuffed. We brought down the Nesco roaster so I could take turkey prep and cooking off Mom's to-do list and out of the kitchen entirely (well, at least out of the kitchen once I get it rinsed off and stuffed). I prepped the stuffing ingredients last night, and I plan to stuff this rather puny bird she bought (just 11 pounds! what was she thinking?! she made me leave my nice 18 pounder back in MD) all under the skin etc... by the time I am done, it will look like a 20 pound turkey, LOL!
The house is about to start smelling really good....
Happy, happy Thanksgiving!
I was hoping to bring a few curiosity seekers over to the AV forum with today's article, but i think it's a slow day for people browsing DG. But when people google for information, trying to find out how not to kill their new AV, that article should pop up... and that will bring them to us! :-)
I think Jim might have triumphed over the network connection! Hooray!! I'll trust his solution if it's still working tomorrow, LOL... but I'm sitting comfy in the family room, typing away on my laptop. :-)
It sounds like most people are too busy to keep track of the game right now anyway, so should I wait until I can get home and post pretty photos to go with the calls? Or do we have lots of people who have been patiently silently wishing that my computer problems would get fixed enough that I could start making calls?
So... start the game now, without photos? or start the game Monday night, with pretty pics?
Either way, I have a piece of great news!
Jan has very generously offered another prize for our game! $15 for the winner to spend as s/he chooses. I said I'll bet the person who wins buys a plant! :-) Thanks, Jannich!!
Everybody's probably napping after all that turkey they ate. What is it about turkey that knocks people out?
I don't know... There was some headline on my news server that claimed the turkey - nap connection was all some kind of urban legend... but I was too sleepy to click and find out the truth... LOL!
We did eat a lot of turkey. The folks said we could be in charge of the turkey, so we promptly went out and bought a nice 18 1/2 pound one (frozen) to bring down last weekend... then we were told to leave ours home, that they'd already found a "perfect" 11 pound bird. Goodness gracious, it was the tiniest turkey I'd even cooked. I fretted all afternoon that I'd manage to dry it out or something, but it turned out deliciously moist. I cooked it upside down, which helped a lot, but I think the saving grace was the impressive (if I do say so myself) amount of stuffing I got into the bird -- not only inside the cavity, but also under the skin, in every possible nook & cranny, adding a *lot* of moisture and flavor! My MIL proclaimed it "the best turkey I've every eaten." *taking a bow*
:-)
Did anybody cook a ham? or tofurkey?
Good Afternoon Everyone! Happy "Day After Thanksgiving"! We got home about 2:30 this afternoon and I am exhausted. We drove down to South Fla to my oldest sisters for the holiday. She doesn't cook AT ALL, so it was my youngest sister and I who cooked for 12 people. We had enought food for at least 20! I stuffed and roasted a 25 lb 9 oz Bird .... The biggest Turkey I've cooked in a long time! My brother in law fried a 15 lb turkey in his super duper turkey fryer ... it was yummy! My youngest sister made a wonderful sweet potato casserole that only a few of us ate ... some don't like sweet potato's. She also made an Awesome home made cranberry saudce ... cranberries, orange juice, pecans, apples. She and I and her daughter were the only ones who liked that. I cooked two huge pots of green beans and 20 lbs of mashed potatoes! My youngest niece made a home made Cherry Pie to surprise her Uncle who loves it (she knows I never make it for him because I don't really care for cherry pie and one pie would be too much for him.) We also had Pumpkin Pie (store bought because I just did not have the time to make it.) But, I did make homemade pumpkin bread, banana bread, cream cheese pound cake (that was a huge hit) and chocolate chip cookies. We were rushing to get hubby's truck packed and get on the road Wednesday morning and forgot the Cookies! My nephew's and my brother in law were disappointed about that But my husband's students will be happy because he will take them to school on Monday!I also had a huge ham that I took down and we had so much food we totally forgot to get the ham out of the frig! All in all it was a very enjoyable time with family but I am glad to be back home to my little house and peace and quiet. It's just the two of us and we aren't used to all the commotion. So many people in and out and 3 huge dogs. I had not seen my nephew's dog since he was @ 7 months old ... he just turned 2 years old and he is HUGE! He is an English Mastiff and is (according to the Vet) underweight at 190 lbs!!
Well, I hope everyone had a very nice Thanksgiving day with family and friends. Since the Bingo game isn't officially beginning until Monday ... there's still time to get cards in to me! If you want to play just d-mail me with your 15 picks from Critter's Master List above! Any Newbies out there who see this thread and want to join in on the fun, c'mon and play Bingo with us ...... we really do have a great time with these games!
Lin
Gessiegail has offered a prize for this game also. She has a lot going on right not so might not be on line for awhile. She wants me to let her know when someone wins and who it is so she can get it out to them.
I cooked a 20lb turkey. No ham this year. Some of the kids have moved away or had dinner at other parents-we're a blended family. So I actually have turkey left over!
Lin- 20 lbs of potatoes? WOW! That's a lot of mashing or whipping which ever you did LOL!
Yeah Diane ... I peeled, washed and cooked them ... my sweet niece mashed them! All 20 lbs! It was a HUGE pot of potatoe's! But, everyone loves mashed potatoes and gravy so there wasn't much left!
It's nice to have help! I'm hoping one day my children will be mature enough to want to come over early to help cook-- Can I send them a copy of this as a hint for next year?LOL My youngest did comea few minutes early and helped cut up fruit for the fruit salad, so that's a start! She's 17, newly married and expecting my first g-child any day. So I guess there's hope for her huh? Nothing out of the older ones!
Diane ... feel free to send copies. LOL. It is no fun when only one person has to do all the work. When my Mom was alive it was always her, me and my youngest sister doing all the cooking at the holidays. My oldest sister does not cook at all, nor does her 38 year old daughter! Since my Mom passed almost 3 yrs ago it's been my youngest sister (who is an awesome cook) and me. This year we had the help of my 20 yr old niece who was home from college for the holiday and she is a great cook like her mom. She especially likes baking! The holiday is a lot more enjoyable and meaningful if everyone shares in the preparation of the meal AND clean up afterwards! Now, if we can just train the husbands, boyfriends etc to do the clean up instead of being glued to their chairs watching football ..... aaaaah, I am dreaming! My brother in law does love to cook on the grill .... he loves to fish and whenever we go down to visit if he has caught fresh fish, he grills it, or cooks steaks on the grill. Every Thanksgiving he frys a turkey. He says next year he is going to grill a turkey! He also loves cooking breakfast when everyone is there. He makes a huge mess but hey! I always say, I will gladly clean up if someone else will do the cooking. Unfortunately it's never recriprocated when it comes to clean up! Guess one of these days my sister and I who do the cooking should just sit down after dinner and refuse to do any clean up and see if it gets done! Cooking is not my favorite thing ... I would much rather do the clean up if someone else will cook.
CONGRATULATIONS Grandma! How wonderful! I envy you. We don't have kids and I would have loved a grandchild to spoil. Wow, she is a young mom! Keep us posted on when the baby arrives. Best wishes for an easy delivery for her and the little one! Do they know if it's a boy or girl? How exciting! I hope you will post a photo when your new grand baby arrives!
Oh yes, pics will be posted!LOL Thank you! has been a rough couple of weeks for her but I keep telling her it's easier when they're still in tummy! And yes she is young! It was quite a surprise. Her husband is 17 also. They were still in High School- he still is. His last year. My daugh. did online classes to finish. Now her husband works a full time job and goes to High School. Proud of both of them!
My husband did whip the potatoes, make the deviled eggs AND helped clean up. So I guess I shouldn't complain. LOL Could have been worse!
Oh! I forgot to say- It's a boy and his name will be James Travis
Diane: I know you must be very proud of both your daughter and son in law. They are becoming parents at a very young age, but are also doing the responsible thing and finishing school! My hats off to them both! They will have their hands full with a little baby, very difficult and trying at any age, but it's so good they have parents like you giving love and support! Little James Travis will have a lot of love and that is the most important thing!
Thanks Lin. You're so sweet. Hoping I can find the right balance. You know- not too interfering but still there when needed....Let them figure things out for themselves... And then there's what they always say. Grandparents get to spoil them, enjoy them then when they're totally ruined send them home with mom and dad!LOL Can't wait for that part!
I don't have kids and neither does my Brother. One day a friend of mine was here when I had the dogs out---Mom came out and I said to the dogs "Look, there's Gramma".
My friend was aghast!! She said that was so rude of me---Mom thinks it's cute. Would you be offended??
Not at all! I know lot's of people who have grand-dogs. And they're usually proud of them!
My Mom dearly LOVED her Human Grandchildren as well as her Furbaby Grand's too .... and she had many grand dogs and grand cats!
