Happy Holidays! With Thanksgiving next week and Christmas and Hannukah just around the corner, the Happy Holiday Season is in full swing around here. Of course, there are still bulbs to be planted and plants to be settled into place on their winter light shelves... but those gardening activities will alternate with cookie baking and jam making and gift gathering!
We have to visit and chat with each other while all this is happening, and what better way to do so than while PLAYING BINGO!
Here's how it works.
I will post a list of 35 African violets with holiday-themed names. Choose 15 names from the list. Those 15 names make up your Bingo "card."
Send your list of 15 choices to Plantladylin, our cardholder for this month. You can Dmail her by going to her memberpage, http://davesgarden.com/members/plantladylin/ and clicking on "send plantladylin a Dmail." Please put "Holiday BINGO card" in the subject line.
You have until TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20 to send Lin your card. She'll either post a list of participants on this thread or Dmail you back to say that she got your card. You are responsible for making sure that your card is correct... double check to be sure that you have exactly15 names on the list, with no names listed twice (it happens). You must have a card with 15 valid names submitted before the first call is made.
Each day, I'll randomly "call" one or more names from the list and post them on this thread. I'll keep a running list of calls at the top of this thread also, and will try to update it daily. When one of the choices on your list is called, mark it off your card. If all 15 of your choices are called, post "BINGO!" on the game thread. You must post "BINGO!" in order to win. First place goes to the first to post, etc.
I will post the first call after noon on Wednesday, November 21 (the day before Thanksgiving). I'll probably start a new thread for the actual game, but of course I'll post a link to it on this thread. With an average of 2 calls per day, the earliest anybody could possibly get all 15 of their picks called would be Tuesday, so even if people are out of town for the holiday they should be back in plenty of time to check their cards.
Prizes: I have donated a 1 year subscription to AVSA as a prize. Kim has offered one of her fabulous handmade doilies. Jannich has offered a $15 cash prize that the winner may spend as they choose (probably for a plant, if I know this group, LOL). Anybody else who would like to offer a prize for this game is more than welcome to do so. For this game, I think we will not assign prizes in any strict order. The first place winner will get first choice among the prizes. The second place winner will get to choose next, and so forth. I think it's likely that every winner will have a different idea of what the "first place" prize would be, anyway, so this should work out well.
OK!
Have fun chosing your cards!
edited to update prize list.

Didn't think I would be the first here, and I said I wasn't going to play this time...
but I really enjoy the bingo games and it gives me something to look forward to each day.
I'm in!
Karen
Yayyy---it's Bingo time!!!!
What is the name of that beautiful violet in the pic??
That's 'Decelle's Flamingo'... not a seasonal-themed name, but I couldn't resist posting that cheerful bloom! I picked holiday-sounding names *and* AV's that had pretty photos in the First Class database... so we'll have a little daily eye candy... :-)
And maybe I'm jumping the gun with all those "Christmas" names... but there aren't any AVs with "Thanksgiving" or "Turkey" or "Pilgrim" in their name... I checked! "Cranberry" was as close as I could get! :-)
I can't wait to see what named plants you are putting on the list Critter! Hope everyone signs up and plays!
A nice, fun game to relieve the stress of Cooking, Baking, Jam Making, and Holiday Shopping! Everyone is so busy at this time of year. At the end of a hectic day we can pour a cup of coffee, or tea (in my case), log on to DG and share our day with laughter and chatter!
I will be waiting for your cards to come in!
Ok ... I see the list is now up there! Can't wait to see those photo's! I LOVE the Holiday Theme of this game!
I had fun putting together the list. I really like the search function on the First Class database... I had no idea there was an AV called Gingersnap, but I typed it in just for kicks, and there it was!
So, does anybody else have too much produce in their freezer from the summer? I kept telling myself I'd turn that fruit into jam later, and I'd make tomato sauce later, and I'd brew up hot sauce later.... well, now it's "later!" LOL After Thanksgiving, I think I'll have the oven busy with cookies and the stove top busy as well!
Do you think we've got enough time from now through Tuesday for people to get their cards in? I figure folks have known about the game for a while, even if I didn't get the list up earlier in the week...
Hopefully there will be enough folks wanting to play to merit a game! I guess we will have to wait and see what the response is.
LOL regarding too much produce in the freezer! I do not have any produce in the freezer! Wish I had a space big enough for a veggie garden! Years ago we had orange trees and grapefruit trees .... they were huge and great producers of very sweet fruit! Then in the late 80's we had a hard freeze and it killed those big trees! I never did plant any more ... but the yard doesn't have enough sun to grow citrus anymore! My backyard neighbor gives me tons of oranges and tangerines from her trees every year! She loads me up with so much at times I have to give lots away to others! And, she goes up to her Mom's and Sister's in N.C. and comes home with apples from their orchards and sometimes gives me lots of apples too! I made applesauce one year that was the best! My Dear MIL used to have lots of citrus trees on her property and would make juice and freeze it. She always had a veggie garden too. I miss her ... she is the one who got me interested in gardening. There were no green thumbs in my family, no one interested in plants and gardening.
If too many people are away for the holiday, we could just chat through Thanksgiving and start the game the following week... as you said, we'll see how many people send in their cards and go from there!
Homemade applesauce is wonderful, and it's easy to put up in jars... I like it really chunky, with a hint of cinnamon! I'm sorry you lost those big citrus trees but glad you have a generous neighbor. Hmm, I wonder how many tangerines would fit into a flat rate box, LOL. Have you ever made marmalade from the fruit? I have an intriguing recipe for spiced pickled oranges, too... they sound like they'd be so pretty in the jar (in sections) as well as tasty.
my card is in lol thxs so much you 2 for doing this
I like Lots of Cinnamon in everything so usually add more than a recipe calls for! Same goes for Vanilla!
I've made both chunky and creamy applesauce before. The creamy cinnamon applesauce I cooked in the crock pot .... just let it do it's thing on low ... smells so good!
Nope, I've never made marmalade! Oh, Spiced Oranges sounds wonderful ... but Pickled?? I've not found anything pickled that I like the taste of yet. But, spiced, pickled ... sounds interesting. Oh, I bet it would look really nice in jars!
The only jam I've ever made is Strawberry and haven't done that in years. I might just have to make some after the first of the year when we have strawberry season rolls around!
Oooh ... I see I have D-Mail .... must be your card Moretz!
i cant believe that i am the first one lol
The spiced pickled oranges recipe looks a lot to me like watermelon rind pickles... in a fairly sweet spiced syrup. It's in one of my favorite creative recipe books, The Joy of Pickling. :-)
Cards are in for three people already!

I've posted on a couple of other threads giving the link to this months game, so hopefully we will get more players!
Woooo Hoooo it's Bingo time again :)
I just sent Ms. Lin my picks. Now everyone cross your fingers that it's the winning card *lol*
I hope you all have WONDERFUL holidays :)
Thank you so much Jill for hosting this month and really making the choices "festive" :) It was fun just choosing the names *lol*
My fingers are crossed for everyone! (I'm going to need more fingers.)
Kim, would you please post another photo of that stunning crocheted art piece you're offering as one of our prizes for this game? I'd just post a link to the photo of your Victorian Lady, but it wouldn't be the same as getting to see her again on this thread! :-)
She is so pretty, Kim! I think it would make a Beautiful photo .... framed with a navy or black background!
Such talent! I am envious!
That is absolutely stunning Kim! Any one of us will be lucky to win that!
Lin, I will have my card in by Monday. I need to be able to print the master list and my picks, and I don't have a working printer here at home. Will have to wait 'til Monday at the library.
No problem! Everyone has until Tuesday Nov 20th - midnight - to get their cards in to me!

I thought it said Tuesday NOV 20...did it change? Just checking in...I will get mine in today...also, whomever won the prize for last month that I was sending, please dmail me...I am so sorry I have not sent that yet, I have been very ill for several weeks now...thanks so much!
Janet
Yes, Tuesday November 20th... Lin made a typo, I think! I'm planning to make the first call after noon on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving... :-)
LOL .... BIG TYPO! I just went and edited my post with the correct date! Sorry gal's! It was late and I must have been tired when I typed that! As Critter said, cards must be in to me by Midnight, Tuesday Nov 20th ... day after tomorrow!
:)
We are up to 9 players! C'mon Ladies .... Please join us for another fun game!
Kim, Just forget the Bingo and put her in the mail to meeeeeeeeeeee.
LOL, too cute :)
You are so funny :)
Kim don't make me come over there.
I am going to withdraw my bingo card as I am just too busy for a game right now. Cindy
Oh No Cindy :( We will miss you TOO much! Don't go :(
Cflowr: If you change your mind just let us know. We sure would love to have you play but I know this is a hectic time of year and we all understand if folks don't have the time to get on the computer much. You don't have to check in every day to play the game. One could actually check the list every few days to see if they have any of the calls. Usually, it's right near the end of the game that people have to really "watch" their cards closely ... when they are real close to having Bingo. So, just let us know before midnight tonight if you change your mind and want to play. I think Critter said the first call will be sometime tomorrow afternoon.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
WE need some more people......count me in, please.
I can still offer a prize of a #7 box of goodies for a prize. I will gladly pay the postage........
Oh Gail ... I'm so glad you are playing! Send me your card! Great prize!
Thanks to everyone for being so generous and donating the prizes for another fun game! I like the idea of first place winner being able to choose the prize of choice and then second place and so on doing the same! Great way to handle the prizes! Also makes it a little more fun cause everyone has that "certain" prize in mind that they really, really would love to win .... and your hoping to get first or second pick before "your" choice is spoken for!
cindy
i will watch your card if you would like plmk
On my way to the grocery but will have to you before the day's end, Lin
I had totally forgotten about Bingo! Thanks for the reminder Lin : ) I would have been kicking myself Big Time if I never got my card in on time! Looking forward to playing : )
Critter I Love The AV Names..They really put me in the Holiday Spirit : ))
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
