What's eating my MG leaves?

This is a new pest inside this year, because I didn't have this damage to my plants last year.

Something eats the leaves up to the thin membrane on the top.

Whatever it is leaves black trailings behind.

looks like leaf miner..

Maybe could be leaf miners but don't the leaf miners leave little trails in the leaves like lines?

I have that on some of my vines too. I believe that it is Leaf Miner. Looks like you might have a colony of them if they are eating your leaves so completely. :-/

With the webbing I am thinking spider mites...

Definitely a type of leaf miner. I have never seen so much damage on a single leaf. I am guessing this happened inside on a plant you may have brought in from the cold???

They strike like lightening, and then they pupate and fly away. The ones we have on the lilac complete their damage in a matter of days, and poof they are gone. Just a little hole too, in the blister they left, to show where they made their exit. Mine only affect the top of the leaf, in late April and early May. Frank

Maybe a bunch of eggs hatched when I brought the plants inside from the cold. I'll have to treat them all.

Beth, I think you should start saving adult specimens of these critters.
I just use a bottle with some alcohol in it.

Leaf miners can be little moths or tiny flies or gnats. They will no doubt expire shortly next to a warm light where they will seem to make a mess. The leaf pix you posted looked like they had numerous felons, and not a single one. Which makes me think that yours were mostly in the magot form. When they are in this form, they are visible below the skin of the leaf, but so briefly that you will probably miss that stage, unless you are watching for it. It all happens so fast. Frank

I wish I had ever even seen one of these critters. They must be so small or secretive that I cannot find them, only the evidence of the damage.

Beth...I'm having the same trouble...it started after bringing the pants inside. Some of my mg leaves look just like yours. I haven't seen a thing but the damage. What are you using to deal with it?

Hi Beth,

In my opinion, these are thrips, which leave these typical trailings behind. I think they would not stay on the plants if you take the plants inside...

There is many types of thrips, check with Ron he has some experience...

I put a 4 hour bug bomb in my grow room and it seems to have killed them all. Make sure to air out the room before you go back in really well.
