Holly Propagation

Has anyone tried sucessfully to root Holly cuttings? What is the best time of year to take cuttings?
What method would you suggest?

What kind of Hollies? They work differently. I've got some to root and not others.

I think they are Fosters Holly..

I haven't rooted those but I looked them up. Rooting the Foster's Holly is supposed to be the same as Ilex opaca/American Holly and Ilex aquifolium/English Holly, if you can find info on the web about them.
Now is a good time to take cuttings. Wounding the ends of the cuttings helps them to root - bop them with a hammer or something to fray the end a little. Dirr's book says to use 8,000 ppm IBA (strong rooting hormone) and stick the cuttings in half perlite, half peat and keep them misted.
Lacking a misting system, I put cuttings under plastic to keep moisture in and spray them often. My biggest problem is keeping squirrels out of them.

Squirrels? Should I be leaving the cuttings outside? I thought keeping them in the house was the thing to do...

You will laugh but I did almost exactly what you have recommended above but I couldn't find my rooting hormone ,as usual! Hubby has to put a roof on my shed and it's only been a year, so everything is jumbled into the garage along with his "stuff". Anyway, I mashed up some aspirin, moistended the ends and stuck them in the aspirin. The cuttings are also only about an inch each because I liberated the branch for ID purposes from the Library and am a coward about taking more.....
I guess they should be longer?

Longer would be better, I suppose. I don't have much room inside, I do cuttings indoors and out.
Your husband sounds brilliant, anyone with a bunch of stuff in the garage who can put off fixing a roof for a year is a genius in my book.

well, in his defense, he has 1/2 the roof torn off because the rafters needed replacing and then because the roof had leaked for so long (we just bought the property last year), the floor was rotten and the ladder went through it. So it's not just a simple roof patch.

I couldn't have used the shed as it was anyway, it's just that there's no organization in the garage. My brother is coming down on Sunday to help him with a solar tube for my kitchen so hopefully the two of them will be able to at least get the roof on the shed before he leaves after Thanskgiving!
