I should have read the label, as after I planted out about 20 clumps of Black Mondo Grass in a full sun spot, I realized they needed part to full shade.
Does anyone have it growing full sun? Does it just lose some of the brilliant black coloration or does it simply burn?
Thanks!
Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus)
I imagine it'll fry in the summer sun, all the other Ophiopogon species/cultivars are also listed as liking shade, so I don't think the shade requirement is just to preserve the black color. If you were right on the coast where your summers were cooler then maybe you could get away with it, but I think you probably get hot enough summer temps that they won't be happy. But if you have nowhere else that you can move them to, then it's worth experimenting and seeing what happens. The only time I've grown this one I planted it in shade, so I don't have any actual experience with them in the sun.
I've had a tough time with it in general. It didn't last in either shade or sun. - I have grown the regular stuff in full sun but with plentiful water.
