I'm curious, what's your favorite movie and why?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I think I,m most in line with Digger's choices (except Das Boot). I'm surprised not to have seen:
Casa blanca
Cool Hand Luke
to Kill a Mockingbird
The Godfather
Pulp Fiction
Good Fellas
Schindler's List
Gone with the Wind
Something with Tracey & Hepburn
The Green Mile

To return to the last thread, animated movies can't be dismissed as kid stuff. Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Toy Story (both) are just good.

I would add the new Hairspray to my list

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Don, The Wizard of Oz is a rare example where the movie is a great improvement on the book.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Dave, excellent list. I'll also jump in on Wizard of Oz. I really wish they had made a movie of Mary Martin's Peter Pan. I so looked forward to it when I was a child. The myriad of Pan movies don't come close to it for me, although I do rather like the Robin Williams.

The In-Laws (Peter Falk version) ...serpentine, serpentine!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Cassavettes & Falk did some interesting stuff.

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

Alright Dave! My favorites of that combo are The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and A Woman Under the Influence.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Looks like the thread should be 'Name Your 300 or more Favorite Movies'. Good list Dave - I would have included some of them as well but one can go on forever. Goodfellas doesn't come close to the Godfather, in my opinion. Too many mafia movies. Casino was just Goodfellas goes West.

A great DeNiro film that people forget about is The Mission.

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

Oops, I just realized Chinese Bookie had Ben Gazzara, not Peter Falk. I loved Peter Falk in Wim Wender's Wings of Desire.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

There is no (1) there are too many genres. So I have 3 with a "set".

#1) Casablanca - Bogie (romance/intrigue)

2) Sorry Wrong Number - Barbara Stanwyck (film noir, great actress)
3) Cleopatra - love the history, Burton & Taylor = TNT+ a match!

4) 'The set' - The Disney Classics - Cultural super ambassadors, they cross all economic, political, geographical & age boundaries; What would the world be like without Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck?

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, I gotta chime in here...!

Funniest movies ever: "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "Life of Brian" and "Sixteen Candles".

Best "middleweight" movies: "Slingblade", "Rebecca", and "Silence of the Lambs".

Best "heavyweight": "The English Patient", "Sophie's Choice".

I really think "Life of Brian" is a heavyweight in terms of statement, but it's a comedy.

Al, you strike me as a Python fan...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Count me in on those Python movies!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I think Spielberg gets too little credit because he is popular.

How about Disney doing Bergman? Or Scorcese? Interesting.
Little Big Man
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
ET

What A Wonderful Life - DH wanted me to add.

North Augusta, ON

How about Lilies Of The Field, with Sydney Poitier?? That was a classic, worth watching over and over.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

I've come to the conclusion that for me, there is no such thing as "a favorite movie". Like Victor says, its more like "my favorite 300 movies", lol!

I was surprised to not see the Godfather earlier also. Not on my favorite list - I can't take the violence. I'm a wimp. As a matter of fact, two movies that are kind of on my list are The Deer Hunter and The Killing Fields - but I can't really watch them over and over because I can't take the violence. Too bad because they are amazing films.

I could easily add Casablance to my list, but The Wizard of Oz doesn't really do much for me - although I did watch it last night, lol. I'd also add It's a Wonderful Life.

I like two of Lina Wertmuller's films with Giancarlo Giannini - Seven Beauties and The Seduction of Mimi. I think he may also have been in Swept Away, but can't remember, it was so long ago.

Gotta agree with some of the animated movies too - Finding Nemo and Toy Story are great movies! I also loved Aladdin.

Never a huge Python fan, but I do like the Holy Grail.

Don, I have to admit to never seeing the original show of Guys and Dolls. A lot of people seem to think that Brando has no business singing, and they might just be right, lol, but for some reason I love this movie! I could watch it over and over.

So Dave, do you not like Das Boot, or have you never seen it? I think the suspense in this movie is amazing - up to Hitchcock's standards. Hard to believe you find yourself rooting for Nazis to make it, but you do! I guess it comes down to basic human emotions, not political agendas or even cultures, but just plain old being human and what goes along with that. Great movie.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Melissa - I grew up watching Monty Python's Flying Circus on PBS - yes I was the only one we've been over that.LOL

Dave - I will agree on the animation. Beauty and the Beast is Disney's best new or remade one.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Disney and Pixar have had many great ones in recent years - Lion King, Mermaid, Beauty, Toy Stories, Monsters, Incredibles, etc. I liked Ratatouille a lot.

North Augusta, ON

Has anybody seen "Behind Enemy Lines"? The ending on it is phenomenal!!

Yes I did. And Top guns. Going to play poker now. CYA tomorrow all

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

So my soon to be exDH isn't the only adult person to watch animated children's movies by himself? He wants to go to all the animated movies himself, but he thinks he'd look like a pedophile.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

LOL Jax!
DH insists I list here his favorites:
Ice Age, Cars, Ratatouille!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Digger, My mistake! I was confusing the Tin Drum with Das Boot. I may not have seen Das Boot but I really didn't like The Tin Drum.

Way too many to pick a favorite. Every published list I saw either had Citizen Cane or Casablanca as #1. And they are about as good a choice as any.

But there are those small movies that blow me away like Bennie & June, or the one with the German & American soldiers confronting each other at Christmas (Can anyone tell me the name?) Or Bend it Like Beckham that started small & got big. I thought My Big Fat Greek Wedding was one of the funniest movies I've seen (also started small & got big)

Can't believe I haven't mentioned Cool Hand Luke. If I could only have 10 DVDs that would be one.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Dave 47,
could it be "A Midnight Clear"?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Not sure, doesn't sound right. Thanks for trying. How are you enjoying the North East?

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Try this Dave47 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102443/plotsummary

Sorry, when it comes to DG I'm geographically challenged! :-D I know I 'belong to' Carolina Gardening, but I join MidSouth, and I like the chatter of NorthEast
~~Jaye

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

That is it! My bad. I thought it was very interesting.

Jaye, we're glad to have you. Sounds like you're an East Coast person!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Thank you Dave. Yeah, you all East Coasters are cool!
Singing, "We are family!!!

~~Jaye

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Bond... James Bond

Fantasy? Not anymore, - sophisticated terrorists, world domination.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, welcome Jaye. You're east coast - good enough for me! I agree with Kane being the best. Can't believe nobody mentioned Amazon Women on the Moon!

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Victor, did that have the same cast as Biker Chicks From Hell? LOL!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Have no idea - never saw it - just love that title!

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Hmm, just tried to do a seach on the Biker Chick movie (which I know I saw and will never forget, lol) and I couldn't find it... but I did find Pterodactyl Woman from Beverly Hills! Gee, these movies are so bad they're good - or at least fun!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Well the best one, as I said, is Plan Nine from Outer Space. Legosi died in the middle of it and they used this horrible looking double.

Wanna see a real freaky movie with a lot of famous people in it - Skidoo. Groucho Marx actually smokes a joint in it!!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7a)

I couldn't read all of this thread, but I had to comment on the fact that someone said one of their favorites was "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover".

First of all, I've never spoken with anyone, ANYONE, that has seen this movie.

Secondly, it is at the very top of my "Most Disgusting, Disturbing, and Gross Movies Ever!" list. In college I went with a friend that said it was supposed to be a wonderful "film". I've never left a movie theater feeling so creepy in my life. YUCK! And I'm a big Movie watcher, so that's saying a lot.

I love the fact that this obscure movie is actually on someones "favorites" list!

Funny how things (old obscure movie) from way back in your past can pop up in the oddest places (A garden website!).

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Thank you Victor. Another obscure but humorous isci-fi is "Bubba Ho-Tep".

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Bubba Ho-Tep is indeed a strange little movie! Quite enjoyable actually, but I have to say the first time I saw it was with my 14-year-old son... a little uncomfortable for both of us, lol, but luckily we have a relationship where we could deal with it. If you've seen the movie you'll know what I mean, lol!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

LOL Digger...ehm yes, not a movie to recommend to your quilting bee!!!!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

In the needless to say department, I was a big fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and the bad sci-fi movies they wised on there. Manos and Pod People were my favorites.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Thank goodness y'all can't see me across your screens!! Shameless to say, I do enjoy bad HK kungfu movies!!! Eee yaii!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

My two favorite movies that I can watch over and over and still cry at the same scenes:

"Finding Neverland" and "E.T."
To me they reaffirm the power of believing in the impossible.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

MST 3000 was great! I loved that show!
