I am looking for a very narrow acer preferably with some fall color? Something that would get 30-40' tall. I've seen some in a yard here in Chicago (apricot color with a red flush) and branches all go straight up. I gotta have one! Any ideas???
thanks....
Columnar Maples?
Unlikely to be what you saw, but check out Acer lobelii as well.
Resin
There's also Acer rubrum 'Scarlet Sentinel' (20' x 40'), Acer saccharum 'Apollo' (10' wide x 25')
'Bout time you hopped on the acer express. I bet it is Acer saccharum 'Newton Sentry'. Rich has a very nice one by the pond that has had wonderful color every fall I have been there.

All the columnar maple I see around here are Norway's

Hacked out a bunch growing through my cyclone fence when we bought this house.
Thanks for all the pics people but I still haven't seen what I'm talking about. The shape is what was most unusual about them. The branches at the crotch all seemed to go out horizontally for a bit and then rocket STRAIGHT up. I am going to drive by this weekend and take a picture of them and then I'm sure you'll all be able to guide me.
Thanks again....
I think that's it! Now....do you know what it's name is?
That is the Newton Sentry. You can check with Rich's to make sure but I am pretty confident about that (it is planted by the pond at the nursery location). Great tree for a spotlight of color.

Yeah, with your help I think you've nailed it. Now.....I can't find any to buy. Any known online sources for a 3'+ tree for mailorder?
Hi Todd,
It could also be Acer saccharum 'Monumental', which is also a very narrow, upright-growing tree.
Mike
Some interesting information here http://www.raretrees.org/acersac6.html with a listing of the following in addition to those already mentioned which might fit what you're looking for:
Acer saccharum 'Endowment Columnar' ('Lanco Columnar', 'HRI 1')
Acer saccharum 'Goldspire'
Acer saccharum 'Sugar Cone'
Only found these two sources for 'Newton Sentry': http://www.arborvillagellc.com/
And once again, a familiar "face" Gee Farms
http://www.geefarms.com/catalog/2007/Ornamental%20Trees_a.pdf They also show a cultivar 'Shawn's Pillar' which I can't find any information for, but might be something to check out.
