Has anyone grown this variety? I had 3 seeds but none germinated. Then I got this bloom in a mix, and it looks like it...but I'm not sure. Today is the first time this vine bloomed and I was going to work so was unable to catch the bloom fully open.
Does this look like "Ehigasa"?????????????????

Question "Ehigasa"
Hi Beth,
I grew seeds labeled 'Ehigasa" in 2006. As I recall it was pink, often showing a slight star pattern and had a white margin that was less substantial than what I see in yours. I grew 4 or 5 plants and they all were consistent, but I have no idea if they were "typical"!
Here are some pictures of those plants: http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/vbc/atenkley/42052/
Hope this helps! - Arlan
Thanks, Arlan
You're very good at journaling! The color looks right but as you said, mine has a wider white margin. I wish I had seen it fully open but had to go to work. I'll see if I can photograph subsequent blooms.
Beth - The photo you posted could be an 'ehigasa' and perhaps the time of year or 'some other' factor produced the bloom that you posted that looks almost like something usually produced by the sunsmile dwarf types...
Here is a packet from Japan depicting Ehigasa

Here is a pink variation that comes out of the SOI/RR types
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/84453/
and this has been called "Ehigasa"...
PF Ehigasa is currently devoid of photos and perhaps better so until more plants can be grown out from packets and elsewhere for a good comparison...

A photo posted in another thread that is sometimes associated with Ehigasa

I think more seeds need to be grown directly out of the seed packets for comparison...

Gosh! It's so hard sometimes to discern one cultivar from another. I will say that all those you listed Ron are quite similar and really beautiful!
Beth - Looks like a winner whatever it's name! :-)
Beth - The Takii packet you posted here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4171549
has been the cause of alot of confusion regarding the Romaji name because the Romaji term for 'dawn' is usually spelled Akatsuki but Takii (if you look and post(?) the back of the packet) it is spelled as 'Akathuki'...most likely a spelling error...and as I had mentioned previously the 'no' is usually not printed on the Takii packets and is implied whereas the 'no' is almost always printed on the Sakata packets...e.g,"Akatsuki no Haru"...
So,we have to try to make spelling 'error adjustments' as well as attempt to translate Japanese into understandable English...
Karen_Blu - I'd call the dark blue double kikyo just that...

Thanks for the clarification Ron!
I checked the back of my takii seedpacks and they say "Pharbitis nil Choisy" EGADS!!!!!!
