I have thought these were two different species, but after watching for a while and taking several pictures, I don't know for sure what is happening.
Can someone help me out here?

CLOSED: Strange mating?
It looks like the male still has his claspers on her. The male Common Green Darners, that looks like them, will continue to hold her while she lays eggs. This is insurance that no other male will capture her and fertilize the eggs.
