harvesting seeds

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I'm wanting to get more Heavenly Blue seeds, but most of the pods are not dried [still green]
If i collected those too, will they be viable? can i just set them out until they dry before i open the pods and take the seeds out?

any info is appreciated.

[i did a Daves search and didnt come up with anything]

TIA,

most of mine i take off green do not do( unless i am doing something wrong). its just easier to buy more in spring on the more common varieties if the dont do.

and maybe someone will have some to trade or something.

the weather here is turning quick i doubt i will get any pods at all. so good luck

Terese - I'd leave the pods on as long as you can. The more they dry on the vine, the better. I think though, if you're going to have a freeze one night, to collect what pods you can that afternoon and let them finish drying on a shelf or something. Nichole

You could also pull the vine up, immerse in water, bring inside a shelter area away from the cold, and wait for the pods to finish ripening. You might even try cutting the vine off and sticking in water. Just a thought if you are going to lose them anyway to frost.

Yes as Becky said you can up root it and plop it in water or cut the stems. Keep it in a sunny window if you can. Be sure to change your water, it gets stinky real fast!! I have 7 I am doing now, 2 with roots, 5 just cuttings. I already have a few seeds I probably wouldn't have been able to save otherwise. It's worth a shot...

we've already had light frost. the leaves and flowers are mush... so i've started cutting them all down.

I did find a few pods, and maybe have about 30 or so seeds. That just may have to do then. the other pods are VERY green and starting to get soft too.

I have cutting the vine off and sticking in water. Because of nightfrost here in Sweden, I have collect several seeds which have mature in a vase of water so it works well here,
