I like the lawn the way it is Sandy. Lovely garden space as usual.
Fall color in the shade garden?
Very nice fall colors in your garden sanannie. I agree with doss, the leaves add to the picture.
Beautiful garden Sempre. Thanks for sharing.
I hope it's not still snowing in NJ! Looks lovely, though, with that pretty dusting.
Our garden is just hitting its peak fall color, which, again, absolutely blows my mind it's so late. But it's really enchanting out there right now and I couldn't resist taking some more pictures. Here are the containers just outside our back door, with Branford Beauty ferns that have turned a honeyed gold, plus fuschia, still going strong, and lamium.
Lovely photos wickerparker and semp. I love the sprinkling of snow. It's wonderful how the wetness of everything makes the colors of your garden sparkle WP.
Thanks everyone for sharing your shade garden phots and info. I have a wonderful wooded area and have a few plants, most of which I don't remember the names. I have fern and hosta, of course, among a few other plants. I have trouble keeping the ferns watered.
Do most shade plants need to be planted in the spring. If anyone knows of plants that need to be put out in the fall for shade, I would appreciate any info.
Hi linda2222,
The fall is generally a great time to plant most perennials, trees and shrubs. I planted up to the first week in October here. I'm not sure about the dates for your zone though
I remember a discussion we had a couple of years ago on spring vs. fall planting. Here's the link: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/546869/
Sandy
Nice photos! Semp, you beat us by a couple of days with your first snow ... ours was this morning and although it's pretty, it was enough to make driving pretty treacherous. Hate that. Wickerparker, your containers have that wow factor both what's in them and the containers themselves - what are they made of?
Sandy
Our first snow is scheduled for tonight, but first we're getting lots of rain, so bye bye pretty leaves. Sanannie, those containers are zinc, with a copper toned finish. They were a great deal. Paid $20 for each one a few years ago in a sale, and they've held up great.
Linda, just want to add that I too plant in the fall, in fact it's my preferred time to plant. Gives the roots a head start and adds to the excitement of my favorite time of the year: spring, when things start poking up out of the ground and I check their progress practically hourly.
Don't forget to water, though, if it's dry there. We've had an extremely warm, dry Fall and I was still watering new plantings a few days ago.
$20 !! What a steal ! Love the ferns in them.
wickerparker, the containers look wonderful and $20 is a great deal on that size. edited to say we were posting at the same time sanannie and we said basically the same thing, sorry.
sanannie the snow is pretty but fortunately it didn't last. It's back to fall weather again, I still have plenty of leaves on the trees.
doss, the farfuguim Argentea is lovely in flower but it's no fair posting that one because you already told me I can't grow it in my zone lol. I like any cream or white variegation on the leaves of shade plants.
linda some ferns don't need as much water but I'm not sure which ones would be best for your zone.
Any ideas on how to treat this one sided JM? Do you think it will grow new branches on the right ?

Semp, I just went and looked at the hardiness of the "Argentea" again and some people say that it is hardy to zone 6b, some to zone 7.
It is highly doubtful that the JM will grow on the bare side. It looks as if it has had some sort of tissue damage there. The only way to salvage this one is to dig it up and turn the bald side to the fence. If that doesn't work, I would get a new one. I know that it's hard to consider. Ask in the JM forum if you'd like though. Someone else may have another idea.
Thanks doss, I think I will try the "Argentea" since I have a few areas with warmer microclimates.
I didn't think of turning the JM which should work nicely. The damage on the side of the tree was made worse by me when I tried to prune off the dead branch and my pruners were too dull. I hope it heals.
Well after the first snow we had a 66 degree Thanksgiving day. How was the weather in other parts of the country?
I thought this photo had a pretty everglade look with the long hanging limbs of the Norway Spruce supplying the greens. The Rosa virginiana has turned a lovely yellow and although that rose is in a sunnier spot the surrounding plants are in partial shade.
Well it was 40 here yesterday and very windy, too cold to get out and work in the gardens I guess that's over for the winter for me except for planting trees :( I'm not ready to give it up yet! I must enjoy pretty pictures like from doss for the rest of the winter, thank doss!
sempervirens, I have a broken pot like that in one of my beds with hens and chicks coming out of it and the frogs like to get underneath of it :)
Lovely corner of your garden Semp. I love the trailing evergreens especially.
It's in the mid 70's here and the patio was so warm I had to come in. It's on the South side of the house and very sheltered. The daylilies are even still opening and I've got some reblooming iris going too. The begonias are over though.
Yes, that's a cool shot. The evergreens make it seem as if we are in a room peeking through the window.
doss, well I just went out to my patio and it was so cold I had to come in! I guess that accounts for the 5 zones between us :)
Sandy
We sure have a little difference between our climates Sandy. It's one of the most fun things about DG to me. I'm always reminded of the difference and I so enjoy it.
