DAILY PICS VOL. 28

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

Wow... a total makeover lol! Did you use a telephoto for these Grass? And do you use a tripod? (that would make stalking a little harder I would guess) I find I need to use a tripod if I am using anything higher than my short range telephoto or I get unclear pictures. But my hubby is able to get sharp pictures with my 200mm lens just hand holding it - something to do with clamping his elbows into his side. I tried that but I get fuzzy pics anyway. I am definately going to try your good idea of moving only when the bird dives .

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I use my 300 mm lens without a tripod and do get some clear shots, although with digital - you can take a bunch and delete where necessary. I put my left hand on my right shoulder, and rest the lens on the bend of my left arm - works pretty well. Again, take a bunch to be sure to get a clear one. Might not work for that ONCE in a lifetime shot. I have 3 tripods, but don't always carry them around.

I lightened one of the pics as much as I can to show the underside. Does that help?

Golden Eagle looks by far the best bet

That's the plumage they have when they're down at the bakery making bread, I guess? ;-)

Lily, I have a digital camera with an ultra zoom lens. The comparable 35mm camera lens range would be 35 to 420 mm. The camera records at 10.2 mega pixels, so I can crop the shot to about 1/9th of the original picture and still have a clear picture (if there was good light). I keep the camera on a light weight tripod, but often use it in the collapsed position and steady it against my chest or a tree.

Great pic of the Three Caballeros adelbert!

My Wood Pigeon babe is getting big quick, I can't see if there's moe than one but it's well over the top of the nest today.

This Steller's Jay wasn't thrilled with me taking his picture.

I added a new bird to my life list today, and I don't think it's been on this forum before either.

Red-breasted Sapsucker.........fat or chilly?

Nice one! Fascinating birds with an absolutely phenomenal memory.

They don't usually go for Ponderosa Pine seeds, so there must have been a poor crop on their usual Whitebark Pine and Limber Pine.

Wow tigerlily!! How exciting. I have never seen a photo of the clarks woodpecker either. I would guess that your sapsucker is chilly. But I see you are in zone 8. Have you had cold weather yet?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I like those grebe's a ways back.

I got a pic of a hawk out the kitchen window today. Resin can tell me if it's a Cooper's or Sharp Shinned - I can't tell the difference.

Sharp-shinned.

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

Resin, the Whitebark Pine grows much higher up, where the Nutcracker is usually found. I know there is a disease or pest problem in the Crater Lake National Park, and the tree is in danger. I'm at just below 1500", so quite low for the high mountain bird.

I sent photos to a neighbor who wanted to know where I'd gone, because they'd never seen one of these. It was just luck I saw it land when I looked up from my briar cutting detail.

lily, I should have put a smiley face on the RBS. ;-) The only "fat" birds I've seen were geese at the nature walk that have a bad diet of way too much bread. The bird might well have just fluffed up in relief. A hawk had dived for a bird nearby about 20 minutes before I took that photo. The RBS didn't move, except to blink, in that time. This bird spends the morning hours on an apple tree just outside my back gate, and pays me little mind, as long as I don't move too fast. Notice is the photo that it sure has the sap running from that tree.

The Quail were busy this morning..............But aren't they always busy?

Today a crane flew over when there was good sunshine and blue sky.

I'd say Cooper's, by comparison with the size of the fence.

Yes thanks Resin for my faux pas. In fact, I checked it before posting, but while sending the post I typed as crane. Two of the four that flew later.

A black kite flies over, probably looking at me, looking at it!! I wonder. Look at its eye, shining in the sun!

Not a great pic to judge from I'll admit. It didn't stay long.

Had the focus been good and quick, this would have been a better shot. Which is this bird? Slightly different from the above - look at its tail.

Today, one eye watching me, a tail next to it.

A little later Mum was sat next to them, after a while she regurgitated whatever it is they regurgitate, one of the chicks went for dinner.

After both taking turns to be fed, a small break then a top up, both babies shuffled their heads under Mum's breast and she sat awhile while they were settled.

First, both bottoms up!

They are so sweet pelle, Mum is used to me and I talk to her, so she's not bothered by my presence.

As what goes in, must also come out.

Mum got hem settled, then slipped quietly along the entrance branch, flew to a nearby lookout before slipping away.

Notice the crossing branches where the nest is on the left. See where it comes from, a long way up where a branch must have been nipped off so threw out a side shoot. Next time you read or are told to cut off any crossing branches in a new shrub or tree, don't do it! This will make a future nesting site in your garden.

Wow thats a really weird angle on that branch!

Another Black Kite. The difference may be because you get two different subspecies in the winter, resident govinda, and wintering lineatus from further north.
