Found this on an oak tree. It was quite large. 2 inches maybe. It creeped me out.
CLOSED: Icky spider Id please
It might be a Trap Door spider, genus Ummidia
Claypa: That is exactly what it looked like. A female one. Dave's garden didn't have it listed so it looks like I need to add it somehow. Wonder why it was out of it's den? I will have to look around and see if I can find it's hole. I read that it's from the tarantula family and that is what it looked like exactly. A small tarantula. Never would have thought I would have a tarantula type spider here this far north. Interesting living in the country.
melsalz,
I agree that your spider is a Ummidia species. Although Tarantula-like, it is not in fact in the same family. The Tarantulas are in the Theraphosidae, whereas Ummidia is in the Ctenizidae, known as the Cork-lid Trapdoor Spiders.
Because we had no representative of that family in BugFiles so far, you would not have been able to create an entry, so I have introduced the family by making an entry for your spider here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/4943/
There seems little chance of identifying the exact species, so I have created the entry as Ummidia sp..
Please add your images to this page. When you have done so, I will be able to select one of your images to illustrate the new family in the index,

Kennedy: Thank you for clarifying me on the spider that I found. I'm glad to be able to add a new bug to the BugFiles. As usual I love Dave's Garden.
Melanie
Thanks Melanie, one of your images now illustrates the Ctenizidae in our index: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/browse/admin/add_family.php?bid=266
Melanie, please keep this one NORTH. I'm afraid to look and see how close you may be to me.
Oh My DevilDogs: I remember you and your "aunt" saga. So I looked up your location. You are not too far away from me, 1 1/2 hours? I'm a Southerner all my life and have never seen this whopper of a spider ever. Spiders are the only things that really "bother" me. So when I saw this one it was all I could do not to squash it. Then I hear my Hubby words "They all have their place in this world" He told me this once after we got out of the car to help a 6 ft. long Copperhead to cross the road. Largest we had ever seen. Been living a lonnnnngggg time. I dunno seems to me there are some things that just don't need to belong.
Mel-
Hey Mel. Well seeing your spider picture and knowing it's one state away (and I'm 5 miles from NC) has really messed with my head. Spent a few hours with my DD today picking pecans and the entire time I was telling myself not to scream if one of these jumped off the tree onto me, just stomp it and move on before DD sees it! LOL. At one point, I got hit in the head with the outer shell of the pecans from a squirrel up in the top of the tree and it was all I could do not to scream like a banshee and run before I realized what it was! You are correct about some things just don't need to belong. But also, somethings, I just don't need to know exist! ;-p
