Recently I had a plant identified in the ID forum by Ecrane as being Thulbaghia violacea. It is entered that way in the PF.
But on internet I found the same plant spelled in a different way as Thulbachia violacea.
http://www.epicplants.com/tagView.asp?ProductIDTrunc=543-02.
http://www.bertymarielle.nl/thulbachia.htm
and there are plenty of other sites that spells it in this way.
On the other hand there are also plenty that spells it like entered in PF.
http://www.plantzafrica.com/planttuv/tulbaghviol.htm
http://www.floridata.com/ref/T/tulb_vio.cfm
etc...
What to do if a plant is spelled in two different ways ?
I've always seen Tulbaghia (no "h" after the T) as the spelling here in the US. If Thulbacia is an accepted spelling, then I think you would just add it as a synonym (that's what was done with Buddleja and Buddleia). But the trick is to make sure it's an accepted spelling, and not something like one wholesale grower had it spelled wrong on their tags and now every nursery that buys the plant from them spells it wrong too.
I'm not finding either spelling in the databases we use. I'll keep checking and see what I can come up with.
ARS/GRIN doesn't recognize Thulbachia, Thulbagia or Thulbaghia: http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/tax_search.pl
Tulbaghia is the recognized spelling: http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?40717
Thank you for solving the confusion!
So Tulbaghia violacea it will be!
It looks that way - thanks for an interesting question! (I had never seen any alternate spellings for it ;o)
