You may want to buy The Book of Indian Butterflies by Isaac Kehimkar, publisher Bombay Natural History Society. It is an excellent book illustrating and describing more than 700 species of butterflies found in India. It is available from Flipkart.com

This butterfly is in the family Nymphalidae, a rather large family with nearly 500 species reported from India. It may be in the genus Precis - see http://tinyurl.com/ya9eeq6 for an example.

suunto, Yes it is resembling the one in the link for most things and I'll go for it. The one in the link is found in our neighbouring state of Kerala. The specimen I have found seems to be a female.
