Mike, I have added the new family by creating an entry for your Azalea Bark Scale here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/4939/

You may notice I have added it as in the Homoptera. When we started BugFiles Homoptera was in wide use for several families of what used to be Hemiptera. There are strong indications that this has been reversed and that Homoptera is at best now a sub-order of Hemiptera, but for the sake of consistency we are continuing to use it.

I think the time is near when we should convert all the Homoptera to Hemiptera, but that is a big job, unless I can get Dave to make the changes.
We have 274 bugs classified as Homoptera at present!

The new family now appears in the index. It would be good to have an image in the index. Will you be adding any images to the entry for the Azalea Bark Scale?

I tried to enter it under Homoptera the first time, I wasn't sure either.
I don't have any images of Azalea bark scale now, fortunately! I'm not sure I could get a decent picture anyway, they're so small... I will try to find some though.
Thanks, Mike

Mike, it is important to have some detail entered with every new Bug entry. Early on we did accept new entries that only provided the species name, but we reached a decision that this provided such minimal value that we should discourage the practice. That means that we ask that every new entry to BugFiles gets from preference either an image or some descriptive comment, or at the very least a zipcode report to give some information on where it is found.
Could you please bear this in mind for any future entries to BugFiles,
Ken

Yes, I understand now.

I agree, bugfiles would be kind of hollow if it were only a list of species. At the same time, some people seem to have difficulty adding a species that they have a picture of. It seems to be working the way it is, though.

I added an image for the scale bug in question - it's from the USDA cooperative extension slide series:

My understanding of their terms is as long as bugfiles is free of charge and available to the public, this is acceptable. There are similar images in plantfiles here and there. If this is not okay, please remove it, and I'll try to get another picture as soon as possible.

Thanks Mike, that does seem to be acceptable as you have provided the attribution that they require.
Adding a blank entry when someone else has an image is certainly OK, as long as you tell the photographer and encourage them to add the image. I have seen you have done this many times and it helps BugFiles to grow. I have done the same thing myself on numerous occasions
