Na Kim, GF will only eat passifloras. They were only nectaring and sunbathing.

DAILY BUTTERFLIES Page 22
Thank you, as of now I've two chrysalises, woohoo, I'm going to get to see these G.F. babies for the first time.....I hope.

Debnes, I was just reading about the Candletree after seeing ya'll talking about cassias, and one reviewer mentioned growing it for the Sulphurs but that it also attracts ants, which can go after the cats. Do you have that problem with yours? It sure is pretty, and I would love to try growing it here, but we seem to have SO many ants here.
Wow Kim, I envy you still having babies to raise!
TexasPuddyPrint, you had earlier identified for me a Sleepy Orange. Well, my book shows that it's got wide black borders, which I hadn't seen on the little guy. Then yesterday he was back again, and I got a good look at him flying, and sure enough, when he's flying you can see the black borders! He has such a quick choppy flight, and when he lands, his wings stay closed, so you can't see those black borders! Thanks for the ID.
Hey, you beat me to it pford, I was just going to put my checkered skipper on!!! But I had to search thru my book first, this is the first one I've ever seen. I should've waited a few minutes, then I would have seen yours, and I would've known instantly! What a pretty little guy he is, the blue really shows up on his body. I'm thrilled to have another butterfly on my list! I read that their host plant is mallows, and I just discovered a shrub I've admired in a neighbor's yard is a Confederate Rose, which I found is in the Malvaceae family, which I THINK covers mallows. Another plant I want to get!!!!
Wow! Thea611 -- what a brilliant picture. The White and Black of the BF really show up well against that Purple/Blue plant. BTW - What is that pretty plant ?
thanks for your photo.
Thank you pford!!!! I was very pleased with the little guy landing just there. The plant is a Veronica, Sunny Border Blue. It did SO well. The bees have just loved it all summer, and the little lizards like to hide in it; I have to be careful when I'm deadheading, I'm so afraid I'll deadhead a lizard!!! The bees just ignore me, they're so happy crawling all over the blooms. I want to get another plant or two for my other beds.
More beautiful bf and flowers, I wished I've more space in the garden. Thanks Thea, Pford, for sharing. :-)
Isn't anyone getting any butterflies any more?
I'm still getting the same old - same old.
But, How about a deformed BF.
I spotted this little yellow deep inside a morning glory, and so I was able to sneak up real good and close.
Then, I noticed that it's wing was deformed. Didn't effect its flying around though.
I can finally come up for air from packaging seeds. All done!!! Finally!
Nice pics Paul and thea! Kim, How are the frits doing?
Yes thea~ The Candletree secretes sugars, which attract sugar ants. Yes they and several other predators covet the eggs and larvae of the Sulphurs. The ants do not harm the Cassia, they protect it.
This is why we have to find eggs and larvae as soon as possible, in order to bring them into cages.
There are ants everywhere, especially in the garden.. They are cleaners, and they decompose a lot of matter which is important to the soil.

I hope so, Debnes. She was such the sweetie. She actually stayed with Cori while she showed her off to the neighbors -- obviously, she was cold. I did notice though, that she was "furrier" than the others that we released. Ok, so that's it for the year, all 11 chrysalises were successes, no one overwintered, and we'll be ready for everyone next year.
I thought I posted this one, but guess not. Long-tailed Skipper butterfly.
The cats I have left to raise....6 ZLWs. Of 3 eggs I found on milkweed, one hatched...a Queen cat..one looked like it was going to hatch, but didn't (guess it's a goner) and one egg still looks the same as it did. I really didn't expect a Queen, although I saw one nectaring a few days after I found these. I thought the eggs were from the Monarch I saw that day.
Beautiful skipper Linda!
Guess that was a nice surprise getting Queen cats..:-). Believe it or not with all the Queens here this summer I didn't get any of the cats to raise. I am still crawling with Monarch cats though. All in all, I am very pleased. Getting more angles on the predators will keep me busy until spring as it is..

I was out doing the planting of my many goodies from the swap, but had a small camera in my pocket. Had to chase him a while to get a couple shots off. I was so excited I couldn't keep the camera still. LOL!
LOL! That is so cool Sheila.
Post the pic in the new thread too.. Some might have missed this.
