I'm looking for comments about the different cultivars of Itea. Next spring I'd like to add one or two to my yard and don't know which ones to choose. I'm in zone 5b/6a and I have places in the yard from mostly shade to full sun. I love fragrant flowers and good fall foliage. Given the choice, I'd prefer one that grows taller than wide but I know that is doubtful with this plant. Which Iteas do you like best and why?
Anyone have pictures to share to help me decide?
What's your favorite Itea?
Ummmm....I guess no one likes Iteas? Why?
I like a cup of Itea while I'm listening to my Ipod . . .
;-)
lol, Resin. I've had an Itea virginica ‘Saturnalia’ that I planted a few years ago. It was semi-evergreen, has never flowered or looked that good. I don't think it likes this climate.
I have "Henry's Garnett" , but it hasn't grown very well for me. I'm thinking it may not like our hot climate here. People a little further north have been more impressed with it.
Darn. I was hoping that I had found a small plant that would have both fragrant flowers and good autumn color. Now I'm not so sure.
If you're soil is fairly moist, it's worth trying. They do have a nice dark red fall color, but I'm not sure about fragrance.
By all means do plant itea. They're beautiful! I've got a couple of Henry's Garnet which I'm very fond of, but they are small still (planted 15 months ago) and would do better with more sun. They only get about 1-3 hours a day in their present location. The one with more (ca. 3 hrs/day) grew about 6-8 inches this year. The other less, but it also lost about half its mass in a lawn-mowing accident so it was just playing catch-up. Fall color is nice and rich, despite limited sun. I don't remember much fragrance, but they did flower. I had one in Canada (also in too much shade) and I think it smelled nice. The shape is the best thing, though. It's just such a beautifully graceful shrub. Seems very happy in zones 5-6. I think there are taller and brighter ones than Henry's Garnet, I just don't know them.
cheers,
Limnaia
Initially I was excited about this plant but now I'm leery. Maybe I'll try them anyway. I have places where I could plant them anywhere from full shade to full sun--and everything in between. This is the right zone for it.
