Spectacular 2007 Cottage Garden Seed Swap #4

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

your ref. to 'Mr clean' is too funny...my H used to be called 'Ned neat' no offence to any Ned's out there!

I am probably one with too small an envie for the return....I wasn't thinking of all the diff size seed pkts coming back. I'd be glad to send in extra postage too or a larger empty envie if needed....gee you need a paypal acct for us to just give you the cash needed instead of all those diff stamps :) please let me know what I should do???

we had our first light frost last night...

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Mmm - killing frost, here. I'm actually glad! Well, kinda.

Anywho, Suzy - please feel free to use my envelope for anyone else as well as the extra postage if there's any left. I guess I really should have sent it to Wrightie, but I've been pretty jumbled on how this is all going to shake out, lol.

Just remember PC= pastel, scented, anything goes!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Okay, hold on -- the wrong people are answering!

As it happens, GRAM you sent enough postage for a box, and your seeds have been going into a box this whole time. (Peeps, she sent 146 packs of the good stuff!) And as it happens WZ, you are getting so few seeds that *we* owe you! SGL, You do not owe a thing, either.

The trouble is (for the people who sent in between 20-60 seeds) the seeds *do* fit in the envies, but the envies look like they will be 1 1/2" thick and have to go as parcels. I need to finish....fill them up, then I need to shake them out and see how thin I can get them. But I have all envelopes at least 1/2 way finished and am looking at the seeds on the tables and the beds and thinking, "Hmmm, these ain't gonna fit!"

I actually just wanted to get people ready for some bad news is all.

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Suzy, please let me know if I can send more postage. You don't need the hassle along with the big job you already have sorting all those seeds. Seriously, you're a brave woman :)

Peggy

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Suzy,
I would be happy to send more postage ASAP, just let me know what you need me to do. Thanks again for all of your hard work I really appreciate it! Rachel

Well BOUQUETS!!!...sounds like great Christmas seed packages coming.. I'll be more than happy to send more stamps and a new envelope, if I'm the guilty gardener, I confess right now and apologize for the inconvenience. You're great to host this swap, and I don't want to be a piglet about it. ;0)

edited for silly sentence structure!

I'm pretty sure that there should be excess postage with my box, so Suzy if that's true, please use those stamps on any others that may be short for postage.

Of course, that doesn't solve the small envelope issue though...

Same here... I tried to include enough for myself plus jordankittyjo, and hopefully I estimated generously. I honestly don't remember, as the postage was the last thing I stuffed into that box, and I probably wasn't thinking clearly by then, LOL! :-)

The postage thing is hard to figure since this USPS added additional (variably applied rules) about BE's... I think I'm going to start assuming anything with more than half a dozen seed packets is going to be need postage as a "small parcel," which starts at $1.13 for the first ounce.

We won't let you be caught short! Just let us know how it all works out, and I'm sure folks will make up the difference asap!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Good morning!

G6, Budbloom you both sent enough, I'm sure, and I can't remember about the envies, but I think G6 I am reusing the one you sent and keeping fingers crossed it isn't too thick. Rachie, Critter, I have no idea on yours yet. Wrightie, yours was always fine because you sent a box. (This does not mean you should send a box to a swap, it just means that it cost her more to get hers here so she was expecting a bigger postage tab and there was a lot of room in it.)

I should never have posted. :( I have plenty of postage. I have *extra* postage. I'm not fond of socialism, but in this case it is working out really well. I am putting the amount of postage that needs to go on and using whatever stamps are here to make the numbers right. I'm pretty sure you'd rather have me have the extra postage than the PO. And I will just put it toward the envelopes.

On *more* than one person's, I didn't turn over the page of stamps they sent and there was another one on the back. And for future reference on swaps, and really I am talking to myself because I always thought paperclipping my address label and my postage together was very smart, but putting them in a little plastic seed envelope or other envelope with your user name, and real name is way better. The paperclips were starting to attach themselves to more than one envelope.

The new bigger envelopes worked like a charm. What had previously been a $2.50 cent package 2" thick stuffed in a 6 x 9 envie, looks empty and light as a feather in a 10 1/2 x 15 envelope and goes for $1.48.

I'm at the end and am tweaking, tweaking. In addition to saying what you wanted, some people also are telling me what they *don't* want, and I want to make sure I don't send those kinds of seeds. LOL! And then I am counting, counting. These little bags are slippr'y, I tell ya!

All in all, it's going rather well.

Suzy

Good to hear Suzy..but know we are grateful to all your efforts and want the job to be as easy as possible for you, our royal hostess!! ;0)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

That's a great tip about the envelope instead of paperclip for postage! Thanks!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

You nut! You sent an envelope!

Suzy

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

lol ... but only because the post office handed it to me that way! Normally, I use a clip. (I had forgotten that I sent an envelope though!) :~p

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Hi kids! The first batch of envelopes will be arriving at your mailboxes shortly, so be on the lookout. The next batch will leave here later this week. The final batch will be out by Monday for sure because the kids will be home on Monday for Thanksgiving.

Suzy

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Suzy, thanks so much for all of your hard work. Wishing you a relaxed and fun Thanksgiving!

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Just got home from vacation and of course had to pop on here before taking my exhausted self off to bed.

Thank you again so very much for all your efforts Suzy. Please do let me know if there's anything I can do differently next time to make things easier for the next swap hostess (I wanted to say "you" but thought I ought not jump the gun on that one, LOL) I tried to second guess my packaging and postage thinking it would help when in fact I may have made things even more confusing.

(And you're more than welcome for the Hospital-Not-Purple-Palace seeds).

Suzy, can't believe how quickly you got thru this giant mess LOL. You're amazing!!! If you ever are insane enough to want to host a swap again I am in, sight unseen. This was the best ever (yes, I know I haven't gotten my seeds yet, but I don't care)!!

Echoing Lala's thoughts on letting us know anything we could have done to 'help the hostess'. Besides shutting up and just taking what we were given instead of asking for the moon and then some ;0)

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Enjoy your kids...Happy Thanksgiving!

Lawdy Lawdy, I cannot believe me eyes! I am swimming in seeds and am positively dumbfounded by the incredible selection. Mind you, this stash will be equally split between me and THE BIRTHDAY GIRL, PaganCat, since I'm the one who threw her name into the mix.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, EVERYONE!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh wow! I can hardly wait for Saturday - getting seeds from a swap is like Christmas! :-)

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I can't wait...have been trotting out to get the mail for the past few days...my husband usually gets the mail...but I'm really looking forward to this!!!

...getting lots of rain here...hopefully the mail man keeps my envie dry so they don't sprout!!!!! this has really been alot of fun and a nice highlight of this gardening season :)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Kids, I now have so many seeds from this swap, plus the packs that I've recently purchased, that I have no idea how I'm going to manage them all. LOL . I will definitely be trying my hand at winter sowing for the first time this year, but I'm also going to end up using all five light shelves in the basement as well. This is going to be KooKooKrazy. My hubbie is really going to goof on me this Winter/Spring for sure.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You have five light shelves? Lucky dog! that's what I want for Christmas!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

ooo, ooo, mee, too (hand up)! I have a light cart, but it filled up with orchids pretty fast and I have no place to start my seeds any more. I have a baker's cart in my mud room and an extra light fixture I'm going to hang from one of the shelves, but that only gives me one 4' area...not enough! even though I'm mostly wintersowing

Yes indeedy..I'll be wintersowing as well. Looking forward to playing in the dirt and filling up containers outside! ;0)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Seandor, if you are in the market for lights, then this thread is a Must Read: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/683246/

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I really like the Gorilla Shelves I bought at Sam's. I can get 4 flats on a shelf (with a little overhang, not bad), and each shelf takes two double-tube florescent shop lights. Because the metal uprights have those holes every inch or so (so you can adjust the shelf heights), setting up the lights is really easy. I put sections of quarter inch dowel through the holes, from front to back, and rest the ends of the light fixtures on the dowels. Their height is easy to adjust!

These shelves are wrapped in plastic because they're made of particle board. The newer ones are lighter in weight and plastic coated. :-)

Hi kids -- The rest of the envies will go out today, for sure. I wrote to all of you in the 3rd wave to tell you the reason for the hang up, so we should all be on the same page. (Apologies to Diana whom I forgot to write)

If you want to know which wave you were in, dmail me. But everybody should get their things on Monday, Saturday if we're lucky.

Regarding the lights and indoor sowing, a heat mat is VERY helpful and Park's is having a 35% off sale right now. I highly recomend you invest in one, just for germination. They are pricey, but once the seeds germinate, you can pull them off the mat and put another load on. They also make a heat mat to keep dog water dishes from freezing in the winter, and I suspect those would also work, I guess it depends on how hot they get, and what kind of thermostat they have.
