planting Resurrection Lily bulbs

Reedsburg, WI(Zone 4b)

How deep and how far apart? I already planted mine but traded some extras with a few other DGers and want to be sure I told them right. (I just mailed theirs out today) I planted mine about 6" deep. I have a ton of squirrls and they go digging anytime they see me dig! They never go that far. Will the lillies come up next year? Does anyone have any tips for the best RL's? These were here when I moved into the house.

It really depends on how large your bulbs are ~ as long as the noses are covered by a couple inches of soil. Spacing is another that goes by preference, I like clumps so they're just a few inches apart.

You'll probably see foliage next year but iffy on the flowers. Lycoris don't like to be disturbed but they'll come back. :)

Thanks, I will d-mail a link to this thread to both of my traders so they also know what to expect. Any other words of wisdom out there?

We like to call them "Naked Ladies". :) I have them growing both in sun and nearly full shade. They hold their bloom color longer if they have a bit of shade in the afternoon.

Depth of planting depends on size of bulbs....

So you plant bigger bulbs deeper?

Rule of thumb is bury them 3 times the bulbs height. Smaller bulbs need to be closer to the surface. Bigger bulbs need the depth to anchor them.

OH, thanks Wanda. Since most of my bulbs were rather large, I prob got the depth about right. :)

One of the fine ladies I traded with d-mailed me this today.

Quoting:
I want to put some in a place that is quite shady (but not completely shady), so I am hoping they will be happy. What months are the leaves visible? I assume that is when they'll "collect" the most sunshine.

Can anyone here help me give her the right answer?

The leaves come out in the spring or early summer (seems like late May), making you think, "now , what is this...?" Then the leaves disappear and in August (at least here) the flowers, almost overnight appear.

I have success in a part shade location.

Ok, that was pretty much what I was thinking. Thanks! I am also in WI and that sounds right for the flowers. Here is a link to the two I had a good show from this past year. I took pictures daily. http://picasaweb.google.com/sjweld/ResurrectionLily I have never really noticed the leaves as they were always planted right along the edge of the house, behind everything else. Now, I have them all in one area under my trellis. I kept about 10 bulbs for myself. Sounds like I may not see the flowers this year but the next year they should have a much better showing than in thier previous location.
