Malus ?self fertile

Rochdale, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Are Malus self fertile. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have a Malus Red Sentinel which was full of apples when I bought it but this season has only 1. Is this settling in or do I need another Malus?

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Most apple trees bear heavy crops of fruit in alternating years. Next year you should have another heavy crop of fruit. Keep in mind that cold spring weather, etc. can affect the number of apples set for the year, so you could have a very light crop of fruit during a "normal" heavy-crop year.

No, apples need a pollinator of another cultivar/variety to set fruit, but it can be any other fruiting apple or crabapple cultivar/variety.

Some apple and crabapple trees are self fertile although they will bear more fruit and more reliably if a compatible pollinator is present. Sentinel is supposed to be self fertile. There could be other reasons why your tree didn't set fruit: late freeze that killed blooms and/ or fruit, stress, it's spending it energy right now in getting extablished among others.
