Moonflower seeds ...

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Someone had asked me for seeds on one of the threads. For the life of me, I can't remember who that was. If you wanted some of my Giant Moonflower seeds, please d-mail me. I am harvesting seeds currently and didn't want to overlook who asked me. I am terrible when it comes to requests embedded in threads as I can never find them later or remember where they were posted. Please d-mail me!

Thanks Becky.

I would love some Moonflower seeds. My daughter has a lot of bare spots in Bisbee.

Hi, about how long after flowering will the moonflower seeds be ready to harvest? I planted some pretty late in the year and they just started flowering 3 weeks ago. Sad because frost is coming soon and there's probably 30 or so buds waiting to open. I'm hoping to be able to get some seeds from them. Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave!

Well.... mine take quite a while. They are quite large seed pods and large seeds. Probably 3-4 weeks ... I am guessing. When is frost expected, Dave?

It dropped to the thirties last night and is supposed to again tonight. But I don't think there was any frost though. Looks like we're getting a reprieve for a little while anyway. Hope it's long enough!

Wow well it was not me but i would love to get some seeds if you have any extra you can spare.

I see that you combined cardinal climbers with your moonvines. Which direction did you have them facing? Can the moonvines take direct sun?

I have seeds already, just thinking about planting elsewhere next year.

Dave - I am wondering if it is possible to get the seed pods to ripen if you have to cut the vines and stick them in water to keep them from dying due to a frost. I wonder if anyone on this forum knows. I have had a broken vine growing and blooming in water for over a month now. I wonder if a seed pod can mature that way? If it looks like a frost is going to get them, I would certainly try snipping some of the vines and bringing them inside and see if you can grow the pods to maturity in water. Just a thought! Be sure to change the water regularly!

Anne - I have mine growing and facing north and south. They grow on both sides of the fence. Mine like partial sun. (Morning sun, afternoon shade.) I hope that helps. Mine took a while to start blooming, but once they did ... the show began and has not stopped since! They are gorgeous! :-)

I have brought full sized immature green pods in and stuck them in sugar water to get them to mature out. I also have the aquarium full of portruding vines right now. The baby pods don't seem to make it, but the full sized ones eventually dry out and do okay.

Thanks, Beth! Good to know this information. :-)

That's good to know, I have some cardinal climber that loves sun. I'll have to find a happy medium with the moon vines.

My Cardinal Climber IS growing with my Moonvines. I think most of the MG species prefer more sun than shade if you want them to bloom. Try planting them in different areas of your yard to see which area they like the best. Often it is trial and error for me. Good Luck finding the best spot for them, Anne!

I have so many vines. I've accumulated some named mg's, as well as purple hyacinth bean vine (and considering buying some white to go with it). Have a lavender/red moonvine as well as some cypress vine, coral vine, and other kinds that I've never heard of lol. I bought a section of cattle fencing to create an arbor over the wheelchair ramp and it is nice. I'm planning on buying several more and putting up arbors around the yard.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Anne - That sounds really lovely! Would love to see some photos! Building arbors for my backyard is my next project (hopefully). Are you wanting White Hyacinth Bean vine seeds? I may be able to harvest a few for you if so. D-mail if interested. :-)

Really???? So cool. Here is a pic of the arbor right after I put it up.

I thought that I had some better ones with the cardinal climber on it but all I have is ones of the flowers at the top.

I thought a mixture of the purple and the white would be pretty. Of course that assumes that they would bloom for me. lol How much sun do they take. I have a spot on some guy wires that only get morning sun till noon. Other places with varying degrees of sun and shade.

Anne - My purple Hyacinth bean gets the same sun yours does. But my white gets quite a bit more sun every day. I don't know if it would bloom in more shade. But I will warn you ... the white hyacinth bean is considerably more aggressive growing. You might not want that one. It is very pretty, but grows amazingly fast. I really like mine, but the growth has alarmed me a few times. I had nightmares of it reaching out and grabbing me and sucking me into the depth of it's masses. Mine has grown what appeared to be 6-8 inches in one day. I found that very alarming! It has died now because of all the rain we've gotten and the roots were too damp. Whew! lol

Love your arbor! Another person on DG used the livestock fencing and made all kinds of cool garden trellises and arbors! Great idea! I'd plant the MG seeds at the base of the arbor and let them grow and bloom all over the arbor! Someone here on the forum did that and it looked really cool! :-)

Well, if during the coming growing season you stop hearing from me, send round up. lol

Becky I will try that. I'm going down to where the garden is at my mom's tomorrow to see what damage the cold has done. I lost my MGs here on my balcony last night but I'm a bit to the north of her.

Two years ago, using poles and chicken wire, I created a thing for the MGs to climb on. My neice and I planted a bunch of seeds but as they started to grow the thing sort of collapsed and became more of a mound than a tower. They didn't care and covered it and then found their way to a nearby sunflower and corn. It looked great but I planned on taking it out this year so I could use that area for something else Well they had a different idea and tons of them started growing this spring. I wasn't about to disturbed them so we had a big mound of purple with a few other colors thrown in. I think I'll be fighting them in that spot for some time to come but I really need that area for something else

This year I planted two yellow climbing roses on each side of an arch with a gate in it (I'm sure they have a name). I figured the roses would take a couple years to put on any major growth or blossoms, so I planted the moonvines to fill in the empty space this year. Well, I was wrong and the roses have been covered with blossoms and one sent up a "branch" over 5 feet high. So the yellow roses are surrounded by the moonvines. Looks nice, though I was worried the roses might get choked out.

Dave - I have been redesigning my backyard and have plans to add a picket fence around the patio my dh and I created this past summer. I have plans of adding an arbor entrance to go along with the fencing. I have been wanting to try my hand at some climbing roses and grow them with some white clematis and morning glories along the fencing and arbor. That is my plan. Still have to do the fencing first. Your gate and arbor sound very much like what I want to do! What you have done sounds beautiful! Would love to see a photo.

I hope you are able to save some of the vines from your Mother's house. :-) Let us know how it turns out. :-)

Becky, I wish I had taken some pictures, the only ones I had were from my phone and they were awful. I never was able to save any of the vines, I injured my knee a couple weeks ago and the doc banned me from the garden! Actually she specifically said no kneeling but I've never walked through any garden without kneeling down to look at something. A freeze earlier this week was enough to kill just about all the annuals. Well, I'll just try again next year but I'll plant them earlier.

Becky, I too would like some moonvine seeds. Frank
