I couldn't get to my camera in time. This butterfly was medium-sized, black or very dark brown with tiny yellow spots along the bottom of the wings. It possibly had a small yellow stripe above the spots and was golden under the wings.
Anybody? I would love to know this one so I could encourage it to stay. It landed on my Calif. poppies and was gone before I could get the camera.

Kw, here's a list of some Ut bfs inyour area, maybe you'll see it. It sort of sounds like a Swallowtail:

Thanks, Flygirl! My butterfly is a Pipeline Butterfly. It was the first one on the list.
The Pipevine STs are so pretty!
Yes, they are. I saw it again this morning near the same place so I have something it likes!
If you get a Pipevine, you'll have eggs and caterpillars and gobs of adults visiting all summer.
I hope so, I've had all kinds of things planted for butterflies and haven't had anything until just a few days ago. Monarda, parsley, Coreopsis, Cal poppies, Caryopteris and various wildflowers.
