brugmansia seedpods

Whoopee it worked have fun reading it everyone ...this is where I found the info that inspired me to look at pollinating brugs to make different colours ...I had never even thought about it before!
Enjoy! and if the auther of this wonderful thread is still around a very big thanks!

Lily I think you are a love ha ha ha ...darned time gone past midnight time for bed...Monday morning daylight savings time now in effect! Have a good one all! :)

I have hand pollinated these, I know the crosses, they where well planned. I collect pollen, dry it to have on hand when I need it. It is easy to do. I will post some how to pictures if anyone needs them.

Tehehehe, good night Mate. Our daylight saving has delayed a week here.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

That is great info Chrissy, thanks for taking time to find and post the link. Please do theraglady, post info about drying the pollen. Sometimes, especially in spring, I don't have a lot of them blooming at once... I did find a seed pod on Maya yesterday... I'll let it go to watch this winter...but won't waste any time germinating the seed. I'll try hand pollinating a couple blooming inside and see what happens.. Then look out next summer, I'll have everything crossed with everything.

We have taken the pictures, and I will post them as soon as we finish getting the rest of our plants under cover. The temps are going into the 20's here tonight, my first frost. What a lot of work even though we had most of the brugs in and under cover we had so many other plants to tend to. They are now all in, but not all in their new homes. The floors ar tracked with dirt and we have leaves everywhere. I am on a 5 minute break, will clean up this mess, then will post.
we gathered a lot more pollen today, I will be all ready in the spring when those first blossoms open.

Oh you poor things!

Don't throw it away I am sure that someone said they will ripen anyway...you have nothing to lose! good luck :)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Hi Kim,
I've visited a friend who lives a zone colder than mine, she has the perfect solution to conquer wind damage with brugs in pots. She sunk them into the ground, pot and all. Then she'd dig them up when it's time to move them indoors....
Good lucks with your overwintering brugs and seedpods, know that you're not alone. There are many of us are doing the same thing this time of year. Even those of us in the Southern hemosphere. lol.
Kim (too).

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Well chrissy i think i"ll give it it a try...HI Kim,cute name:)...next year i will put them in the ground thanx..I have learned so much in a few short months it's amazing.

Okay, here goes. We collect pollen and pollinate usually in the evenings after work. I use very few and no hard to find items. I usually use a hemostat, but since this place is in such a state with bringinn plants it I can't find my normal little collecting kit. Today I used a simple pair of tweezers, the longer the better, a sharpie fine line marker and I use micro centrifuge tubes which I buy on ebay, usually listed under daylily pollen tubes. When you look into the flower you can see the anthers and the stigma. There are usually 5 anthers around the outside of the stigma. Look for the anthers to be covered with fluffy pollen granuals. With your tweezers pull out the anthers and put them in the tube. If you don't have tubes you can put them on a paper plate or piece of white paper. Once you have removed all anthers label. I put the tubes open into a plastic container (Plastic food storage container). The silica graduals will hold the tubes up. I leave them there for three or four days then store in zip lock bags in fridge or freezer.

When I am ready use the pollen I can then just lift an anther, and apply it to the stigma of the plant. Many do use natural bristle paint brushes, but I am too lazy and just can't figure how you can get all pollen from the bristles to avoid mixing up the pollen. Once you have applied the pollen then you tape(masking tape works fine, I use plant labels the open end of the plant shut to keep bees and moths out.

If you are using paper plates or sheets of paper you can put them in a place to dry and store in little baggies, which will need to go into freezer. Make sure you label with name of plant and date. Little coin envelopes work well and are prefered by many people. This is just what works for me.

My Dh is using my camera for the first time, don't tell him I said this, but he is not very good at it. LOL

I sometimes put the pollen from two flowers into one tube, saves tubes and space.

theraglady;
Thank you, for taking the time out to educate us newbies. I've a thread on Mid-South Forum, may I share these helpful lessons with the folks down South? May I mark this on my fav. so I can refer to them as I'm learning, and have these info. as referrence?
Kim
p.s. What is the cultivar of brug that you've taken the pics. of? It's stunning, I haven't seen one (in person) of any brug that has that beautiful hue....sort of salmon orange?

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Wow, you made that look so easy.I will be dreaming all winter of this lesson:) thanx so much.

The flower is pink velvet, the color is not as dark as it usually is, it is blooming in the house and lighter then normal. She is a wonderful brug, blooms all summer, and accepts pollen easily. She produced 7 nice pods for me this summer.

You may share it is neither rocket science or any deep dark secret. Just easy.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thank you, again, you're more than generous....
Pink Velvet! Now that one I'm going to dream about.

I know you can get it from Country Gardens, it is one of JT's.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Have you got a website? Care to share....there I go again...

Brenda, I clean my paint brushes with rubbing alcohol. It is supposed to kill the pollen. I have several different paint brushes so I don't have to wait for them to dry.

Good explanation on collecting and using pollen.

While there is a seed pod discussion going on I have a question. I understand it's a waste of time to bother trying to germinate Maya seeds. Is that also true of Sunset? The plants have been in the garage for a week so they would lose leaves and yesterday I noticed two pods on the Sunset. Will these continue to grow and is it worth the trouble? Thanks.

I would like to ask a similar Question ...I have pods! :) first time ...
thrilled until I read some just throw insipid and sickly white ones only
can anyone tell us please
1) a few names of good parents for lovely babies

2) Will my Grande Marnier crossed with a white Suaveolens work?
or will I be wasting all my happiness?
Thankyou chrissy :) chewing my nails waiting for a verdict.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Brenda can you tell me who you buy your micro centrifuge tubes from. I am in desperate need of ordering some.

I buy mine from seller earthstore on ebay, I paid $14.00 for 1,000 including shipping.

You never can tell how far back into their gene pool brugs can go. One seed pod with 40 seeds could produce 40 different plants, many will be similar, kinda like kids. ever see that kid who looked like a spitting image of great Aunt Millie. I have never seen Grand or White Mariner or your white suave, but it is hard to tell. Suave gene are dominant. I sure can't even guess what you might end up with. My first cross was between the only two I had in bloom, i was just practicing. A friend grew out some of the seeds, I gave them all away. She just got the first blossom, it is white. but has wonderful form, fragrance and is a beautiful white.

Growing brug seeds is not all that easy, it will be good to have some for trial and error, who knows, you may get something beautiful.

As far as I know, all variegated seeds are sterile, they will germinate, the seedlings will be albino and the will die in a few days.

I might have some seeds I can share in a few weeks. Till those pods mature I can't make any promises. Anything can happen.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I've an unknown white brug that is a prolific seedpods maker. I hand pollinated 4 of them, the rest were open pollination. Even an unknown (NOID), it's a keeper and continues to bloom and makes seeds until this date in our zone.

Hi Kim. Lovely white...and so many blooms! I really like the way they cluster together.
Bev

Thankyou for the information and those white Angels are lovely!
I have no flowers left on the grande marnier so I borrowed a picture
They are strong and healthy ...a lusty grower. They start a creamy white and turn through pale shades of peach until finishing as a deep peach ...a lovely fragrance ...at the moment it is just seed pods. The white is a nice one with very long trumpets ...no whiskers ...but the most heavenly perfume. It too has pods on now.
I am thrilled ...because even if it does not work out I will track down some others and I know I can "breed "them now. Thanks so much for everyones help and good luck to all the "new brug breeders"

Bev,
I measured the blossoms, it's exactly a foot long from the base of the calyx to the petal margin. Its has a dreamy butter scotch aroma to it, especially at night. :-)

MMMmmmm!

Chrissy, G.M. is lovely!

Makes me wish I was there to smell them, Kim...imagining:-)

Thanks Theraglady. If the variegated seeds are duds then I won't bother. I have become hooked on "desert rose" and have no room anyway.

Watertown, NY

Love desert rose too, I am going to try to add a few new ones. We have really enjoyed the ones we have. Have you grown them from seed? Do you have seeds
