hi everyone, this is a great forum, so many knowledgeable folks here.
I have been bitten by the brug bug!
I went out this morning and noticed that my painted lady has set pods from open pollination. I had adeline and new orleans lady blooming at the same time. what should i do? I don't think we have enough time in our zone 7 for the pods mature. any suggestions on how I might obtain some viable seeds from these pods?
brugmansia seedpods
I have the same situation. I bring my plants in and put them either under lights or in a sunny window and wait, and wait and wait till they are ready. I takes months.
I do same with mine, bring inside and keep growing. one took almost 6 months to fully mature. Pod lost it's shine and stem started to turn tan, could feel bumpy seeds inside.
Do they continue to ripen even if you lose the leaves from bringing inside?
Sure do, I have to do it every year, we have a short growing season.
I do too!
I have never had mine open pollinate so I never get seeds. You would think with the hundreds of blooms at least one would get pollinated wouldn't you?
Oh my goodness. Silly me. I've had a few open pollinated pods, but it was always at the end of the season and I discarded them thinking they need to be outside to mature! Not only that, I didn't even want to learn about hand pollinating because I didn't think there was time in the growing season.....What an idiot! Well, tonight I'm going to the basement and inspect... I think I may have seen one on Maya! Loves2garden, THANK YOU for posing the question! Opens up a whole new avenue for me and brugs!
Seeds from Maya will be sterile, don't even waste your time, some do germinate, the produce white seedlings which die in a few days. Hope you get lucky and find one on another plant. I had that happen last year, didn't see it till all of the leaves fell off.
No pods on Maya, I cut off the branch that had one when I trimmed her to bring inside. I do have a couple others with blooms going and the versi is too tall for me to investigate and I'm not organized enough in the basement yet to get the ladder even close to it to look... Thanks for the info, theraglady.
i have dr. suess and not one seed pod. as far as that goes my confederate rose never produced seeds either. maybe not enough bees?
We have phinx/hummingbird/owl moths that COULD and I guess did naturally pollinate Maya, but you have to have 2 different brug plants blooming to make a successful cross. I had possibly 2 other brugs blooming the same time as Maya, but I I understand that Maya is not a good one to carry a viable/growable seeds pod. So I guess I could use the Maya pollin to another brug and let that brug carry the pod?..so as to introduce the maya into the equation? The only sure way is to hand pollinate. I've never attempted that, but I'll educate myself this winter on how to do it.. here's one doing it's thing.. they were fun to watch
very pretty, auntb
AuntB, what a great picture!
Hey AuntB what is your pet moth's name ,he he.. i have decided that they are cute not creepy:)
Could someone please take a picture of some brug seed capsules because I have never thought of growing them from seed before now.... and have run around with my brush playing "birds and bees"....it is mid Spring here so I have time for them to ripen but I don't know what to look for....the ones I "helped" have a little green pointy thing where the flower used to be....like a little green bullet
1) are those things there even if the flower is not pollinated?
2) do they grow bigger?
3) they are about 1/2 inch long....I only pollinated them about 8 days ago
4) If they are how will I know when they are ripe?
Any tips or hints would be most appreciated.
It was Grande Marnier x white Suaveolens......I have plenty of cuttings but after seeing all the different ones available over there I am anxious to try some crosses. Do you think I am wasting my time crossing these two?
thankyou chrissy
I THINK you got some chrissy! Have they grown or started kind of swelling? I have no idea on the cross... Pretty pic! Kim, so you're liking them now, huh? They are quite entertaining and a challenge to photograph. Here's what they look like before their transformation... ewe! If you see some on your brugs, let them have a couple leaves then move them to somewhere's else cause they can do quite a bit of damage if you don't know what you're looking for.
I've crossed pollinated a few seedpods, then the moths must have pollinated some for me this year. It's my 1st year that I've got some seepods. I'm excited too, to find out how they all turn out.
Goodluck everyone with your pods!!Ok AuntB now that's just icky, yuck ,.....never seen one if i do thanx for the tip:) nite Chrissy
Nite nite Chrissy, sweet Angel dreams!
wow, what a healthy hornworm! and they love brugs, dats and tomato plants!
my seedpods are about an inch long now, i have three of them. I'm going to leave her in the ground a bit longer, we don't usually get a really cold night until close to thanksgiving and she is setting more flower buds right now, as is my adeline and new orleans lady. might have some more flowers!
Those seed pods will take months to mature. I still get so excited when I find one ready to pick. So far this year, three have matured many many to go. They get very big.
theraglady;
Do the calyx (sp.?) or sheath turn yellow and reveal the seedpod eventually before the seedpod itself mature? I've a few for the first time. They feel like a big okras under neath the sheaths.
Sometimes it will stay on over the pod a long time, others will drop off, don't know if it is different for different cultivators or not. The seed pods are different shapes, Versi pods are very very long and skinny in the beginning, then get fat as the seeds mature, others are banana shaped, egg shaped, fun to watch the differences. I will take some pictures later today and post them. I am sure there must be a link somewhere here with the different pod shapes. By the time the seeds are fully ripe you can feel them inside the pods, it gets very lumpy, stem will start to turn yellow. It seems like it takes forever.
Top of the morning to you Chrissy (hey, it may not be morning there in the beautiful land of yonder), what's time is it there? Good time, whatever it's. *^)
Wooo! That is so neat a picture, and informative too. That may help me to identify my unknown brugs that I've crossed. (by a long shot, but I'm hoping). Because what I did was crossing X x Y = Z. A sort of hybrydizing a true NOID brug. lol
theraglady, I'm looking forward to seeing those pictures, I've never seen a seedpod on a brug before. I have two unnamed brugs that have been growing here for years, but have never gotten any pods. Can't wait!
Cathy
This is a white brug bearing multiple seedpods, some were hand pollinated with peach & pink brug's pollens. Addidtional seedpods were open pollinated. I'll have fun sorting out the seedlings to determine which is which in the future.
This is a good picture, you can see the seedpod through the semi-transparent/refection by the morning sun's ray.
Well, thank you for the pics, everybody. I just realized I have seed pods on my Charlie. The question I have is: what do you do with them? Leave them? Etc.?
Thanks
Sarah
I'm going to learn more, about seed germination. Early July, I acquired half a dozen saplings, which were few inches tall, they're now 5-6' tall and some of them has made Y's formation, that's the reason why I'm eager to have some seeds. They grow very, very fast. MM's seeds? Open pollination, what other brugs have you got blooming so you can estimate what it's was pollinated with? Theraglady, keep us posted please.
I probably am doing this wrong so I will check it out....it should take you to classic threads ....in there is a wonderful thread about brug pollination

Hi Chrissy; I've a named cuttings that's named "Chrissy" by any chance that it's named after you? lol.
