hi...i can't remember if lilies do ok with black walnut trees or not....have bunches of daylilies that don't mind
any way, i hope the lilies can work with the bwt :-)
thanks, lynda
anyone have experience with lilies and black walnut trees?
I have lots of Black Walnut trees and Asiatics seem to do better than Orientals, for me, anyway. My shade is pretty dense where I had the Orientals, so, that could be part of the problem, that and root competition... On the edges where they get more light, the Orientals seem happier. The Asiatics really don't seem to mind being put most anywhere. They get a bit tall stretching for what sun they can get in the denser part of the shade, but they always seem pretty happy..

Ticker, how close are your lilies to the root system of the black walnuts. I haven't at all experimented, but I was under the impression that lilies were not one of those things that were immune to the juglins toxin. Learn something new every day.
that sounds promising...will definitely try some asiatics
we have several large bwts lining one side of the drive & i put flower beds (mostly daylilies, several trumpet lilies, hostas and coral bells) in between just about where the branches met...the newest area has more sun so perhaps i'll try some orientals there
it was hard to tell how happy the trumpet lilies were since i planted them late, but 2 out of 3 bloomed and smelled heavenly :-)
Hmmm, well, how close. I don't really know. Some are within three feet of the trees, and some are further away.. I really think lack of light has more to do with the Orientals not liking where they are under some of the BW's more than the BW's themselves. I have some Orientals down at the base of some hosta beds that get a lot more light and they are just fine and they are within three to feet of the BW trees.
yeah :-)
that opens up quite a few possibilities for me
thanks!
Good to know, as we have a number of critters burying black walnuts that end up sprouting.
i think the critters forget where they bury some of the walnuts....can be funny when it doesn't involve digging up bulbs looking for nuts!
All that said, I wouldn't put one of my expensive oriental Buggy bulbs under the black walnut trees. If you're going to try it, put some cheapo's down there and see how they do...
