Solution to "big ear tears" = Bigger greenhouse, or, move to south Florida!

Dallas, TX

LariAnn, Will be moving to FL. as soon as i win the lottery!!!!!!! Jerry

Dallas, TX

LariAnn, Please raise me some of your EE's to the largest you can for Big Ear Feast. " Borneo Giant x Robusta", "Borneo G x anything", " Robustas x anything", Anything with big wavey leaves. Thank You, Jerry

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Jerry, you know what you're asking for? Planning on bringing a semi to pick up? I have the recipe, but can you handle the results?

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

What's the second pic? That one's pretty cool.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

I had a 'Tiffany' (as well as cuprea, 'Polly', advinicula (sp?), lauterbaachiana, 'Borneo Giant', and the list goes on...), but it died. I also had a A. rugosa but it pooped out on me ...or so I thought. Earlier this year, I noticed it had come back up (after about a year's absence) in 2 places near where I had it in the ground. I've only successfully grown A. cucullata(sp?), the regular ol' Home Depot type you get everywhere, and - so far - (knock on wood), 'Stingray'. I recently bought an A. robusta. We'll see how it does. At least, it's labeled "A. robusta".

I also had A. zebrina reticulata for a couple of years until our over-abundance of summer rain took it out this year (along with a number of my other plants). I do still have another that is hanging by a thread - it never really gets going, but it refuses to die. It's got triangular-ish leaves (or, well, when it has leaves, anyways, lol) with pasty white veins and a whitish or milky/chalky green color. I'll have to check to see if it has any leaves right now (or if it finally kicked the bucket).

Ya, I love alocs, they just don't love me.

Red Oak, TX

Carter, That Alocasia is a Portii. they are very beautiful, and pretty easy to grow! If you have grown a Portora before you can grow this one. Mine isn't as big as placenciarita's.

Alocasia Lutea, early Fall. They are like big smiles in my garden. I wish that I could overwinter them, but they always rot.

Jerry, you want to BUY an Ear that big?? At the Big Ear Fest?

Dallas, TX

LariAnn, No, I want to grow some of yours to that size! But if i could buy some that size i would be years ahead for my zone 8. Even a 10ft. tall one will fit into a brown paper bag with the help of my boyscout knife. The larger the size of the corm the larger the EE will be right???????? I hope you are growing me some of your new hybrid EE's for your BIG EAR FEST '08 Jerry

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Jerry,
You'll have plenty of plants of my two hybrids to be released available to pick from. If you want a larger Ear of one or both ot them, I'll have to push a few up to that size. No problem reaching a large size; I'd just hate to see you cut the leaves off for transport (and believe me, you will, too, once you see them and realize how different they are from any Ears you've ever grown). Do you plan on flying or driving?

Dallas, TX

LariAnn, I will most likely be flying i do'nt think my old back would hold up to a 2500 mile round trip. Will you have any BORNEO GIANT x ROBUSTAS and BRISBANE WAVES that i can get at BIG EAR FEST? What else? I'am just like a little kid waiting for Christmas day! Jerry

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Jerry,
Borneo Giant x Robusta is a hybrid I have yet to perform; I'm hoping I'll be able to complete it this Spring. The Brisbane Waves I have only 3 green and 1 mottled so not releasing at this time. The two I already mentioned, the Imperial Giant and the Blue Portora, will be available, plus some non-hybrids like the A. sarawakensis 'Dark', if they bloom for me and I can self seed them. I may have a few others, maybe a few Borneo Giant x Portei (HUGE). We'll have to see how things go and what "Santa" brings!

Dallas, TX

LariAnn,Please super grow one each of your biggest leaf EE's for me. And a PORTEI if you have any. Your Borneo Mac's are doing fine and growing. Thanks. Jerry

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Things are looking kinda quiet lately - I imagine a lot of folks have been securing their plants for the winter in greenhouses and such. But it's time to stir the pot with some more tantalizing Ear pictures - harbingers of what's to come!

This Ear you've seen before, but it's much bigger now, and going to be a LOT bigger come BEF! Parentage is Big Mac x Sinuata.

LariAnn, Did we ever come up with a date for the BIG EAR FEST? Jerry ps. more pictures please!

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Jerry,
Tentative date for BEF is May 16 and 17, 2008. Alternative date is May 23 and 24, 2008 if the first date is a problem for the majority of those wanting to attend.

More Ear pics are on the way!

San Antonio, TX

If there is a list of people to notify when this is definitely set, I'd be interested in being included. I would love to just see some of these enormous plants but just in case I fall in love with at least one Im taking my pick up truck..........

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I would love to be on the list to be notified...mmm sounds like a job for 18 wheeler truck to haul this stuff home!...LOL...still waiting for the first freeze to hit here..

Dallas, TX

LariAnn, Hope you are under sunnys skies and doing well. Any new pictures and new hybred Aroids. Thanks. Jerry

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Jerry, yes it's sunny and 80s here, although it did get down into the 70s a few weeks ago and I had to break out the snorkel coat :-)

I've got some plants I need to take pics of as they are really growing. In fact, the Blue Portoras in 4" are already 8 to 10 inches tall and, believe it or not, some are ready for sale. My A. x robudoras have grown enough that I am now certain of hybridity. So there will be some BIG Ears here come May 2008!!

Where's AuntB and everyone else? It's been quiet as a tomb on the forum!
LariAnn

Dallas, TX

LariAnn, It's been warm days then cool to cold at nite. Talk about the BLUES. Today is the first full day of sun in a week. I'am ready for SUMMER!!!!!!!!! YES where is everyone? Hope everyone is fine and doing well! Jerry

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

LariAnn, the two EE's I got from you a couple months back are doing really well, new leaves and looking very happy. I think I've finally decided on a place to actually put them in the ground! Hope they will be nice and big next summer!
Thinking about taking a drive down to Miami next May. My DH has a van....

LariAnn, The last time i went to the Aroid shw and sale in Miami, I went to the Prime outlets,Walmart and Homedepot. Ok what is the Hotel on the corner of S. Dixie Hwy. and E. Palm dr.? Any other better ones? We should have one picked out for us out of towners! Jerry
