Need help to ID coneflower seeds

Hooks, TX

I need to know which part of the coneflower head is the seed. I saved many dried cones in a bag. When I tapped the cone, these things fell out:

a 1/4" thin black cylinder thing
a beige colored triangled thing 1/4" and flat
a 3/4" part that is black on one end and beige and pointy on the other end

I don't which part to save to plant next year. Thanks for any help you can give to me.

The beige colored triangle thingy is the seed.....looks kinda like an arrow head.....

threegardeners,
thanks so much for clearing that up for me. I would have picked the tiny black thing. This is my first year for collecting the coneflower seeds. Did I read somewhere on DG that they won't grow out just like the parent flower? Would they be a different color, or what? These plants were grown from seeds that a DGer sent to me when I first joined in Nov. 2005 - so long I didn't remember what they looked like.

I know the purple and white come true...not sure about the fancy new hybrids though....I'm going to try some razz ma tazz I gathered next year and see....

claypa,
Thanks so much for the link. That picture shows what I have. What are the little black tiny cylinder things? These came from flowers like the first couple of pictures, the deep pink ones.

Never knew this was here! The wonders of DG never cease!

This was helpful to me too. Texas, did you get very few seeds from each pod?

flowerhead410,
The picture below is one that I took today of the seeds & etc. from one dried coneflower. It's blurry (I must have breathed or something when snapping) but you can tell the amount of tan seeds and also those black cylinder things. I wish someone could tell me what they are.
From my estimate, there are about 75 seeds, maybe?????
And, I saved half a Walmart bag of dried ones.........way tooooo many.

A coneflower is a composite flower, meaning that the 'cone part' is really made up of lots of little flowers. The little black things are just the chaff from all of these little flowers. Simply discard them...they serve no purpose once the flower has dried.

melody,
Thanks so much for permissioin to ignore and discard those little black things. They did look like seeds to me.

Without those pictures, I would have sent the wrong thing in a seed trade. DG's information is so good, with pictures! C

I've never planted coneflowers before, but want some for next year. Do any of you have some to trade. I don't have a lot of different things because I'm a "newbie" but I do have some morning glory, corkscomb (deep red), marigolds, and 4 oclocks.
If anyoone is interested, please let me know. Everyone keeps saying, why don't you just get them at the store. Poor people. Don't know how exciting it is to get them in the mail!!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Oy! Are all coneflower seeds the same? I just did some WSing of Harvest Moon and Art's Pride. The harvest moon seeds I was given looked more like a marigold. The Art's Pride while having some of those triangular pieces, had a FEW little black seeds, kinda morning glory like.

HELPPPPPPP!

Lorraine, I'll try to remember to add a packet of Purple Coneflower seeds for you in the zinnia swap if Lissa will send them on. I have about 700 billion of them!
