Burpee`s Best Mix grow out ( Ipomoea Nil results)

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I bought 4 packs and out of all the packs I singled 21 ipomoea nil seeds out of a Lot of purpurea seeds. Well, I went through the correct nick and soak procedure and only 11 sprouted all within 3 days and I`m unsure why the others did not sprout. 10 have grown into vines getting ready to bloom.

This is the first bloom. This looks like a long vine small flower variety magenta with a white throat.

Does anyone else have results from a Burpee`s Best Mix packet in the ipomoea nil category?

I got this photo from July, but did not take anymore after that. I dont' know why. I really don't think it bloomed very much or just a couple of flowers if that and then the plant died. There were four seeds and I should have a couple of other photos.

Here is one from July 20, and there was one that looked alot like the one you have.

I got one like that pink one on my first failed grow out of one plant. I managed to get about 10 seeds from that plant. The seeds are light brown with a darker stripe. Karen

There were 21 seeds and only 11 sprouted. Out of the 10 seedlings that grew out successfully 8 were white throated magenta color and 2 vines were solid magenta like the one in this picture. They were all long vine 3 inch flower variety.

This was the majority of the vines grown successfully. They are pretty 3 inch flowers, brightly colored and the vines grew about 10 feet or so. They were nice and healthy too.

hi karen
its interesting that the blooms came out very similar out of the four packs, not much of a variety...and low germination rate...unfortunately
thanks for reporting back to us so we know what to expect from our packs.

In my first failed growout I got a light pink large flowered variety.

In this second grow out I suspect the brown seeds with the darker stripes on them were the ones that failed to germinate and they looked like large flower variety seeds. I think the ten successfully grown plants were from the very dark brown seeds I noticed in the seed mixture.

That's really interesting, Karen. I guess the commercial seeds are not as good or viable as most of the ones we all harvest ourselves. I wonder why the germination rate is so low?

I didn`t see any apparent reason for the seeds to fail but it is also interesting that the brown seeds with dark stripes in the mix were the ones that did not sprout and have not sprouted to this day. Next time I do a grow out like this I`ll classify the seeds and take pictures of the seeds for later reference. It was a good learning experience.
