Actually, Only a friend and I saw it. We trapped it long enough to photograph it, and although I don't remember for sure (it was a wild teaparty) I think it was allowed to hobble off into my garden.
I am interested in what it is and am quite confident someone here will know. As much as it looks like a wasp, it doesn't, and it was the size of about three wasps.
Note the fine antenna.

CLOSED: Giant one-winged golden Wasp crashes August teaparty
Hi K, I would say it's a type of Braconid wasp. That's might be a clue, or might not!

Hiya Wallaby.
Braconids are tiny little buggers. Don't get me wrong, I love them.
I was being facetious in the title, but I was serious about "Giant..."
The mouth of the plastic jar inverted over it is perhaps 12cm wide.
(I just planted three bulblets of your A. speciosum in the garden today. Thanks again for the seed)
OK then, we'll upgrade that to Ichneumon wasp, they have long antennae and a narrow waist but there's an awful lot of them! They mostly don't have a species name either. The wasp family is huge (in number). I had a brownish thing too, it was quite large and I haven't a clue yet!

Good luck with 'in the garden'! Mine are still in their pot.
