Just got this elegant philo with its leaves growing every other way,
giving the impression of dancing, light green ( lemony ) undersides, over 22 inches long
and meaty main veins.
Philodendron MARTIANUM
BWILLIAMS,
I have a cannifolium and they are both absolutely different.
Cannifolium leaves are very thick and straight up and don't get that large.
looks more like an orchid, with the petioles thick, short and round (orchid style)
Martianum leaves are longer, more flexible as you can see, plus have red dots on the main veins which the cannifolium don't have.
I read about both being the same but I firmly disagree,
Attached is the cannifolium which I got from Marie Nock , which I consider an authority
in philos.
Very nice, Giancarlo! It does look like dancing leaves! I love the looks of your cannifolium too, but that first photo of your martianum is really great!
BWILLIAMS,
Attached is a shot at the main vein of martianum with the red spots
I think you should consider changing your mind as not all the descriptions
about plants are correct.
Does the Cannifolium have these red dots on the main vein and
part of the petioles????
Do you own both plants to be able to make a comparison?????
Or are you going by what somebody else wrote
The philodendron cannifolium does not have spots. The botanist say that cannifolium and martianum are the same plant just different clones. One being a bet shorter than the other. I am not sure if Steve and Marie Nocks have both forms or just one. I do know they carry the old form called martianum. I will look into this more to be sure but I believe they and Dr Croat agreed that the plants are the same species. Now for your spotted plant these are sap glands usually prduducing a sugary liquid that feeds ants. The ants inreturn help rid the plant of unwanted pest. Your stem and plant looks exactly like the philo I have called crassinervium. Which is a climbing philod with long lance shaped leaves a very wide midvein and sap glands. Here is a pic of the stem of my plant to compare to what you have.
Here is a pic of the whole plant. This one is not completely mature and I have other forms with longer leaves more spots and such. Just different seedlings. This is what I believe your plant is. Maybe a second opinion may help. But if your plant being to climb or comes out of the pot fast looking to climb it would not be Martianum or Cannifolium.
I always thought (from what ive read) that P. martianum and P. cannifolium were one in the same with the former (martianum) being the correct name now. Seems like Eduardo Gonclaves mentioned this somewhere but I may be wrong.
Nice plants regardless
