I saw a post here about using a bubbler in a bucket of water to propagate plants by cuttings. I also saw this article in a magazine about using a pot of sand with a clay pot of water stuck down in the center of it so the pot waters the sand and you could root cuttings this way. I have not had much luck with cuttings lately. Everything seems to shrivel and die. I was using the cut it and stick it method....just cutting some off, using root hormone and sticking it in some potting soil. I was wondering though, who has used these other methods? Which one seems to work better? I really want to start propagating some stuff come late winter/early spring and have had no luck this year.
Bubbler or Sand? Someone tell me....
i am certainly no expert on propagation.............but I start almost all cuttings in a soil-less mix, perlite and vermiculite with a dome or baggie..............potting soil is just heavy unless you want to use maybe 1 part potting soil to 2 parts perlite??????????????????/
I'm not sure about that sand method. I am experimenting with the bubbler method, (see my post on it). I have also tried the stick it in sand method and put a bottle over it method. Out of every ten pots I potted up (roses), only 1 or 2 would get roots. Very dissapointing. I tried all types of soils, no luck.

I actually know nothing but i have heard that roses need 40 degree temps to root...........
Have you tried Liquid Rooting Hormone? www.dipngrow.com You can even do hard wood cuttings with this stuff.
thanks................have to get some of this for my jatrophas.........i can't seem to root them............
I don't know which ones, but I'd say you'd probably have more luck in the spring time with plants that go dormant in the winter - aren't jatrophas deciduous?
yes they are but we are a good 3 months from temps that would even make their leaves fall off..................plus i would be doing it inside on mats and under lights.............we are still having 90+ days a lot of the time...............
Maybe bubbler or vemiculte mix. I have a lot of sand outside and it tends to hold moisture in the winter. Two types of hormones dip n grow and rootone. I use more rootone cause it is mixed and has a fungicide. I have used a bubbler for a couple hundred plants. It is faster but does take multiple water changes or you can contaminate the whole bucket. I go to pots if at all possible seems to make a tougher plant.
Saw a neighbor in Taft posting. Gassiegail what are you growing? I am a brug man plus tropicals.

Hello, jpotts461!
I have my first 3 brugs and have wrestled with those big green giant bugs eating the leaves all summer. About ready to give up. Tell me your secret with the green jolly giant bugs who chew the leaves.
I grow 8 gro light stands full of gesneriads inside and for propagation.
Outside i grow any and everything from hoyas, hibiscus, cactus, every blooming vine I can find from Bleeding Heart Vine to the mandevillas, bougainvilleas, love all kinds of jasmine climbing everywhere, bromeliads, and all lipstick, columnea and green baskets.
I shop all the time at Johnson's in Ingleside.
Hello, Try Rockwool. Start them in 1.5x1.5x1.5 cubes and Olivia's Gel. Put the cutting in a dome, water w/ Olivia's Solution once and week and you will have roots in 2-3 weeks. ~~Viola!!
thanks, forevereden, but what is Olivia's Gel?????
Olivia’s Cloning Gel is a balanced blend of rooting agents contained in a viscous, inert, water-soluble gel base. The sticky Cloning Gel seals the fresh cutting immediately and reduces transplant shock. Olivia’s Solution used with Olivia’s Cloning Gel gives complete results.
WE just need to know where to get it? It sounds great but I have never seen it around here.
Gassiegail, what type of green bugs. They only thing here is earwigs and grasshoppers that eat up the leaves. You need some night blooming jasmine. Grows real good here and smells out of this world. Vine I collect here and there. I have a bunch of madevilles , some more were brought to me today. I like morning glories, trumpet creepers the most. I have a few hundred native passion vines. Most of my stuff is fragrant or very showy flowers. In the shrubs I like esperanza, duranta, cassia. I also got some vitex trees today. Still hunting a few Tallow trees. I may have to dig a few myself. I have no idea how many brugs I have but probably 100+ and growing fast. I just propagated another 30 and when I cut mine back and root the cuttings I will have several hundred more. I just love them, always flowering and the smell is great.

Concering Olivia's Gel - Do a Google search - lots of sources!
try eBay too....
Last fall I potted up twelve very easy to root flowers in typical potting soil because I was ill and did not have inventory of materials to make a proper medium. Even with rooting hormones I lost all but one.
The rooting products discussed in this thread are all good. When the instructions are followed they will all grow hair on a broom handle when the moon is full for four consecutive days. :)
