Does anyone know how to propagate corkscrew vine without the seeds? I have a plant growing and I tried to take a couple of cutting and putting them in water but that failed. The weather is getting colder and I'd like to get something to grow indoors for next year. It took me awhile to get this one to grow so it didn't have enough time to produce seed pods although I think I did see one small one.
corkscrew vine
I think you can pot it up and overwinter it indoors if you have room. Not sure as mine are left out all year.
uncle...the one that i have been able to do if the plant wont root in soil was to take a cutting ...put it in rooting hormone ....then put it in soil; THEN put the whole thing in a zip lock bag....; water it when you put in a bag....; if the cutting is going to root then this is the only method i have found that will make it root hands down...i would check the cutting ever couple of days to make sure mold is not growing....if it is...just open the bag up for a day or so..
Thanks. I'll give it a try. This was my first year growing one and it took me awhile to get it growing long enough. It smells great and I want to put it in a more dominate location.
These plants form huge tubers over time - divide the tuber, making sure to get at least one 'eye', and propagate like you would a potato.
Kay, do you know if the same is true for the regular purple snail vine?
A few years ago I had a very large cs vine that had lots of seed pods on it that did not have time to ripen before having to move it inside for the winter. I cut off the runners that did not have seed pods on them and put them in a bucket of water. Set the whole thing in a corner and forgot about it. Was surprised the next spring to find that several of the runners had rooted and survived the winter in the bucket of water. I have also rooted cuttings in plastic soda bottles (cut in half, potting soil in the bottom and covered with the other half of the bottle). The mother vine I moved into an unheated g-house and successfully ripened the seed.
I have one of these and can probably over-winter just fine here in FL. But, I want to collect some seeds from it... does anyone know what the seeds pods look like??
Beans...
I don't, Pagancat, but just pop it out of it's container and take a look.
I have success with taking runners and putting them is pots of soil but not cutting the vine from the mother plant. If you scratch the vine a bit before potting, roots will begin sooner.
My snail vine roots by runners along the ground all the time. Constantly digging them up for compost or they would take over the yard. Most of my corkscrews are kept tied up so I don't know if they would do the same.
I'm still trying to figure out if they're actually related or not - one is a Phaseolus and one a Vigna, right?
Yes, although from what I have read, modern day know alls put it in the same family.
My opinion, they are vastly different. The only similarity for me is that they are bean and have foliage almost identical. Other than that, they have nothing else in common that I can see.
Interesting - thanks, budgie!
Very interesting interchange on the difference over at that other place http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/vines/msg112232029443.html
DG lists Vigna as a synonym for Phaseolus http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53274/
My American Horticultural Society A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants also lists them as synonyms.
It may be time to get a DNA test done.

my sil digs hers up and she dont have a gh and very little sun in the house but she puts it to where it will get some sun(which is very little) and she says she gives it water every now and then it will loose its leaves she says and that is all she does and then in spring she brings it back out side and it grows for her like a weed lol so good luck
I asked this over on vines forum, but haven't got an answer...maybe you all will know...I brought mine in for the winter because it has set a lot of buds and want them to finish....how long does it take from bud set to flower?
im not sure on that but i know you will have to give it the sun and humidity that it nees to keep going or it wont work
unclehudy
she said she cuts her plant to where it isent but like 6'
I have it right in a south window, which is the best I can do up here....hopefully not a drafty window......yikes...better check that......and have it surrounded with other plants which, hopefully, will give it some humidity....but...sheesh......these buds seem frozen in time.......
wow...I can't wait for mine to open!!! Maybe have to have a talk with it.....and maybe another shot of fertilizer.....
it loves sun are you giving it enough sun? mine gets the HOT evening sun from1 until the sun goes down and it has been very hot and dry here which i have kept it watered lol
I can do sun...don't know about hot here in Canada......there's been ice on the pond in the mornings and the days are only in the 50's....but I have the house at 72....
well it likes it warmer then that lol we had 35+days of 90 and above in a row this year and this is the best it has ever done so it loves humidity and heat and sun so that might be why it is taking its time to bloom
it has gotten cool here and all my seed pods have fallen off and no blooms so i know it is because it isent getting what it needs it gets water but not heat and humidity and i havent dug it up yet we havent had a frost yet so it is staying where it is until we get a frost
